Man Jailed For Attacking Two Women

April 6, 2011

court gavel justice28-year-old Darrin Burgess starts a two year jail sentence today [Apr.6] after pleading guilty to two charges involving assaults on two women, as well as a charge of witness tampering in the case involving alleged Parkside member Prince Edness.

Mr Burgess’ first conviction, for which Magistrate Archie Warner awarded a one year sentence, was of causing grievous bodily harm to a female. This offence took place on 25th February 2011.

The Court heard that this incident was caused by a dispute between Mr Burgess and the female victim that involved her displeasure with the noise and disturbance that Mr Burgess and her brother were causing whilst they were drinking and ‘carrying on’ inside her apartment. Mr Burgess, in his defence, said that in this altercation, he had received a stab wound and had blood gushing from himself.

Mr Burgess admitted punching the female and, in so doing, breaking her nose. Mr Burgess said that she had called Police and Ambulance assistance, but that he had not. He also said that he had later apologized to her. On this conviction, the Magistrate ordered a twelve month sentence.

A second charge and conviction related to an assault on another female. This offence took place in the immediate vicinity of the Captain’s Lounge on Reid Street. Mr Burgess admitted punching the lady and causing her to have pain in her jaw and suffer recurring headaches. Mr Burgess said that this dispute involved the lady having a disagreement with Prince Edness involving her pressing charges against Edness. For this conviction, Mr Burgess received a thirty day sentence.

A third charge and conviction of the offence of tampering with a witness arose from Burgess’s texting and messaging the second female victim. These texts and messages, duly captured, recorded, and recalled by the electronic messaging service that all cell phone users use; showed that Mr Burgess had been sending messages to the lady in an effort to get her to drop or withdraw charges against Prince Edness.

The Prosecutor gave evidence that one such message had been sent, by Mr Burgess to the female, while she was actually in Hamilton Police Station; and that this particular message had clearly sought to pressure her into dropping the charges. Evidence from this recorded call showed that Mr Burgess had promised to provide her with several thousand dollars if she dropped the charges.

In a Bermuda twist, Mr Burgess said that he found out, after the incident, that the second female victim was his cousin.

Pleading for leniency, Mr Burgess said that he was a father of two and had a drinking problem. However, acknowledging that he was likely to be sent to prison, Mr Burgess also asked if he could get help for his drinking problem while he was in prison. He said that he was in a bad period of “sufferation”.

For the offence of tampering with a witness, Magistrate Warner gave Mr Burgess a two year jail term. All sentences are concurrent with each other.

But it was not over. Mr Burgess was then hit with two old charges relating to theft. He pleaded not guilty to these two charges and he will appear on 21 July to face these two charges.

Now he can go up top and chill wit his homies that are already there.

Wats the back story with this guy – did he see his momma get beat by his old man or a boyfriend? Since when is it ok for a man to lay off and punch a woman in her face – and he did this twice- two separate occasions to two different females. Drunk or not this blantant disrespect for women stems from his upbringing.

When mothers wise up and hold their boys to the same high standard as their daughters we will move to a better place.

Oh, n I wonder if his ‘two children’ are male or female – how would he feel if some man laid off and slapped/punched up his daughter or better yet will his son grow up to hit women too. WHEN DOES THE CYCLE END??????????????????????????

I truely feel for the youth of today – some people just should not have children! Say what you like that’s just how I feel!

He deserves a supreme court sentence that would increase from 2 years to a minimum of 7 years for his cowardly acts.

    Prosecution appeal the sentence.

  4. Nicole says:

Exactly, he punched two females on two different occasions. 2 years is not enough especially when he broke her nose.

  6. All or nothing! says:

It seems that Bermuda has gotten real soft. I was always told that the dog wags the tail, not the tail wags the dog. Some thing has to be done and fast about this crazy generation which seems to have lost all respect for established social standards. The way we are going, we may as well apply to become a third world country. By the time our politicians figure out what measures to take to combat the Chaotic tsunami about to over take us, we may very well be a third world country. Who would want to invest or visit then?

I smell a rat. Why all this now? Who stands to benefit from all the drama? Who profits from devaluation of land that crime brings? Look around the world.

This is what happens when kids raise kids.
