Two Records Set: Carifta Swimming Day #2
Two new Bermuda records have been set at the 2011 Carifta Swimming Championships, now underway in Barbados.
The second morning of competition was finished off with 11-year-old Mitch Gariepy [pictured/file photo] breaking the 400 IM record by 11 seconds. and Nick Patterson setting a new record in the 400 IM for the 15-16 year age group.
Jesse Washington continued his strong fly swimming dropping his best time in the 50 fly by 6 seconds and taking the fly record from Nick Patterson. This was already his third triple A time for the meet qualifying him for this summer’s CCCAN in Puerto Rico.
Ashley kept the fly rolling with a strong swim in the 50 fly taking her into the final up against several of her class mates from the Baylor school. This was another another record swim. Going into the final 2nd place is 30.63 and 7th is 31.06 so it will be down to the touch.
Shannon Hassell was the huge surprise with an amazing swim in the 100 back. She dropped her time by a whopping 15 seconds taking her into the finals at 6th place.
Emma Franklin had a strong 100 back dropping her personal best time and making it to the final in her first year in the top age group.
National Coach Ben Smith said, “We are looking forward to some very good swims from the individual finalist and also from the two relays that will be doing the 4×100 medley tonight.”
