Allen & McShane-Hoey Win Sir Stanley 5K Race
The Sir Stanley Burgess 5K Road Race took place this morning [May 1] with Stephen Allen and Roseanna McShane-Hoey winning the Male and Female Titles.
Mr Allen covered the distance in a time of 16:10, with Tony Banks finishing second clocking 17:07 and William Thompson finishing third with a time of 17:33. Meanwhile Ms McShane-Hoey crossed the line in a time of 19:57, while Sinclair Dill won the walking race clocking 33:02.
The race is named after legendary runner Stanley Burgess, a multiple time winner of the May 24th Marathon in the 1940s and 50s. His 1951 win came at age 49, making him the oldest runner to win the race. He competed in the race for a approximately sixty years, from 1921 to 1983 running well into his 80s. A perennial crowd favourite, in later years the crowd was well known not to leave until the elderly Mr Burgess finished the race
