“EEZy Shopping” For Government Employees

May 20, 2011

Dozens of businesses in North East Hamilton saw an opportunity to welcome the Government workers located in the new 130,000 sq. ft. Dame Lois Browne-Evans Building to the neighbourhood and to entice them to take a few steps north into the EEZ.

EEZy Shopping, Dining and Living was born from the vision of Court Street beauty salon owner and BSBDC Board Member Ms. Laquita Hill who suggested that EEZ businesses get together to welcome government workers to the neighbourhood. Ms. Hill’s salon, Kim-Kita’s, is conveniently located directly across the street from the new building.

As a result of this suggestion, the EEZA facilitated getting business owners in the North East Hamilton EEZ to provide special incentives to government workers. The result of their cooperative work has led to the development of the EEZy Shopping, Dining and Living discount promotion.

A brochure has been created listing all of the participating businesses and their respective discounts. The brochure will be emailed out to all Civil Servants, and a copy is available below. To take advantage of these special discounts all government workers have to do is show their Government Picture ID, business card or other ID that shows their name and department. The discount program starts today [May 20] and will run until June 30th.

Mrs. Erica Smith, Director of the EEZA thanked stakeholders for supporting both initiatives. She stated that “The EEZA continues to work to stimulate living, working and playing in the EEZ.” She encouraged all Government Workers to take it EEZy this summer by participating in the EEZy Shopping, Dining, and Living discount programme and stop by Dr. E.F. Gordon Park for EEZy Groves in the Park to enjoy the musical tunes of some of Bermuda’s most talented artists.”

Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kim Wilson full statement follows below:

Good morning,

I am pleased to be joined by several business owners of the North East Hamilton Economic Empowerment Zone to announce the latest exciting promotional initiatives in the Shop Local Campaign.

You will recall that last December the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation partnered with the Chamber of Commerce in the Shop Local Campaign to encourage residents to spend their dollars here at home.

The main aims of the campaign were simple – to stimulate our economy and to show our support for our local businesses.

Today we are pleased to expand this campaign with the introduction of two new programmes.
For the past several weeks the Economic Empowerment Zones Agency has worked to develop a great value savings initiative for Government workers as well as the creation of the “EEZy Grooves in the Park”.

First a bit about the Government workers savings programme.

Just a few blocks away you would have noticed that the brand new Dame Lois Browne Evans Building is now complete and bustling with activity.

This state of the art facility, which houses workers from Magistrates’ Court, the Bermuda Police Service and others is now formally located in the EEZ.

So we thought what better way to welcome them to our neighborhood than by launching the “EEZy Shopping, Dining and Living” campaign.

The EEZA worked with business owners in this area to develop a value savings programme that will allow ALL Civil Servants in all realms of Government to receive special discounts from participating stores and businesses in the North East Hamilton EEZ.

To date there are over 25 businesses participating.

To take advantage of these special discounts all you have to do is show your Government Picture ID, business card or other ID that shows your name and department.
The discount programme officially starts today and will run until June 30th.

Now for our second initiative.
Ladies and gentlemen, today we are also pleased to formally announce the opening of “EEZy Grooves in the Park”.

This exciting event, which is free to the public, will take place every Friday right here in the Dr. E.F. Gordon Park, from 11.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. through June 24th.
Today the public will be treated to the beautiful musical sounds of contemporary pianist Mr. James Richardson.
Following Friday’s will feature variety of talented musicians whose sole aim will be to delight, entertain and engage our community and visitors alike this summer.
Ladies and gentlemen, the EEZA will continue to provide initiatives to stimulate living, working and playing in the EEZ.

So I encourage you to take it “EEZy” this summer by participating in the “EEZy” shopping, dining, living Civil Servant discount programme and by hanging out in the Dr. E.F. Gordon Park for the “EEZy Groves in the Park” series.
A free concert and a value savings initiative, I for one couldn’t think of a better way to engage and embrace our people and our heritage.

I’d now like to invite Erica Smith, EEZA Director to say a few words.

Thank you.

Government workers need to be tickled a little bit. The PLP sense some bad vibes out there right now and an election is looming. To secure the workers votes a little stroking is needed. No doubt More will follow.
