More than 70 of the island’s top cyclists gathered in Somerset this morning [May 24] for the annual Bermuda Day Sinclair Packwood race [1962-1998].
Mr. Packwood was, for many years, one of our top riders, winning several events and representing Bermuda in multiples competitions abroad. The race followed the same route as the marathon does; from Somerset to Hamilton, but instead finishing along Cedar Avenue rather than Bernard Park. Darren Glasford won the race.
The Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby is a Bermuda tradition which dates back to 1909, when a group of Somerset runners organised a race around the Sound. Some British soldiers stationed on the island heard about the race and extended a challenge to the Somerset runners. The competitive aspect of the race now acquired a new urgency, with the Bermudians keen to prove that they could beat the British.
That year a British soldier crossed the finish line first, much to the disappointment of the Bermudian runners, who requested a re-match the following year. So, the Half Marathon Derby came into being.
This year’s 102nd event attracted more than 700 participants and was won by Chris Estwanik with Lamont Marshall coming in second and Sean Trott finishing in third place. Deon Breary was the first female competitor to complete the course.
