Tyrone Smith Wins Grand Prix In Japan
[Updated] Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith has won the Men’s Long Jump at the IAAF World Challenge/Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Japan.
Mr Smith, the Bermuda National Record Holder, won the long jump with a leap of 8.09, just beating out Mitchell Watt of Australia who had come into the competition as the favourite.
In third place was Japan’s Yohei Sugai with 8.05, while Australia’s Robbie Crowther placed fourth with a leap of 8.03. The competition was held today [May 8] in Kawasaki, Japan.
No stranger to success, Mr Smith recently received the Male Athlete of the Year award [pictured], was Bermuda’s top finisher at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in India, and won a Gold Medal in the 2010 CAC Games in Puerto Rico.
Update 9:35am: BTFA President Donna Watson explained that Mr Smith’s leap of 8.09m “is just 1 cm from qualifying for the World Championships and Olympics. Tyrone has rarely jumped over 8m his early in the season so this puts him in a good position for some great results this year heading into the Olympic year.”
In addition, other track athletes based overseas performed very well this weekend; Jasmine Brunson competing in the Bob Pollock Spring Invitational placed 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 6.16m which qualifies her for the Pan Am Games.
Daniel Emery who is now living overseas, participated in a meet and placed 1st in his prelims in a time of 11.26 and placed 2nd in the finals in a time of 11.38.
