Video Previews: May 15 Weekend Film Series

May 12, 2011

A charming documentary that has broken box office records at Film Forum in New York, and an Italian comedic drama that was the country’s nominee for the 2011 Foreign Language Film Academy Award®, are the featured films at the ‘Weekend Film Series’ on Sunday May 15.

The documentary, Bill Cunningham New York, screens at 3 p.m. while The First Beautiful Thing will screen at 5 p.m. Tickets, $15, can be purchased in the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 297-7314.

Bill Cunningham New York (rated PG) is a profile of the Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist of the same name who has been inventively and obsessively chronicling street fashion – and high-society soirees – for The New York Times’ On the Street and Evening Hours features for 50 years. Photographing uptown fixtures, downtown eccentrics – and everyone in between – Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair. The film is a delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace. “The best fashion show is always on the street,” Cunningham says.

The First Beautiful Thing (rated R), described by the Hollywood Reporter as “a highly-polished crowd-pleaser featuring great performances all around”, won David DiDonatello Awards (the Italian Oscars) for Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress, and was nominated in 15 other categories. The film is a beautiful and touching comedic drama featuring sexy and effervescent Anna (Micaela Ramazzotti), a small-town knockout whose beauty contest win angers her jealous husband. When he walks out, she raises their two kids on her own, teaching her family to remain open and loving and to cherish the little joys in life. This fun and emotionally involving film traces the eventful life of the vivacious Anna from the 1970s to the present through the eyes of her son, Bruno, and is a beautiful exploration of the human condition.

The ‘Weekend Film Series’, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.
