Updating: Island Games Day #1 Results

The first day of the 2011 Island Games is underway in the Isle of Wight today [June 26] and Bermuda has started off strong winning two medals in the Mens Half Marathon. Bermuda is represented in a number of disciplines, and we will keep you updated on our athlete’s performances as the day progresses.

Tennis
Both the men’s and women’s Bermuda teams had a bye in the first round and will move on to the quarterfinals, which will be played later today.

Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team lost its first match, and the ladies volleyball team lost to Aland.

Badminton
Bermuda’s team of Rick Dorush, Rewena Cespedes, Diane Blais, Mark Haugen and Rohan Pai lost 5-0 to the Isle of Man. They then picked up a 3-2 victory against Gotland.

Basketball
Our men’s basketball team – who are considered strong medal contenders – completely crushed the Norwegian island of Froya, winning 129 to 13.

Track and Field
Victoria Clarke finished 3rd in the Women’s 100m in Heat 2 running in Lane 3, Clarke clocked a time of 12.87 which should see her into the Semi-Finals.

Shooting
In shooting Ross Roberts and Nelson Simons competed in the ISSF 300M Centre Fire Prone Rifle event, Roberts finished 10th with a score of 534, while Simons finished 11th scoring 444.

Cycling
Competing in the Men’s Individual Cycling Town Centre Criterium, Tre-Shun Correia, Neil de ste Criox, Darren Glasford and Dominique Mayho all finished in a chasing pack with a time of 1:05.28.

Sailing
Bermuda’s Brett Wright presently leads the Laser Standard Rig after finishing 1st and 3rd. Fellow Bermuda team member Rockal Evans sits in 5th after finishing 6th and 8th. There are 24 competitors total in the class.

Upcoming
In squash, Bermuda is set to play the Shetland Islands, Jersey and the hosts Isle of Wight, while the badminton team will take on Gotland later today. The men’s volleyball team will play the Faroe Islands.
