17 START Students Join The Hospitality Industry

July 12, 2011

As of July 1, 17 Bermudian high school students took up positions in Bermuda’s Hospitality Industry, a result of their participation and completion in START. Presented over 10 weeks this spring by the Bermuda Hospitality Institute, START is an American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute [AHLEI] certificate program.

“These young men and women demonstrated dedication, commitment and a level of excitement about the industry that impressed their instructors and current employers,” said BHI CEO, Karla Lacey. “The 10 weeks they spent on the course stretched over their busy exam periods at school, as well as every Saturday morning.”

Their successful completion guaranteed each student full-time summer employment within the Island’s hospitality industry at one of the many hotels and restaurants who committed to holding positions open for them.
“We all know summer jobs for students were scarce this year, especially for high school students” said Ms. Lacey. “The industry has been totally supportive of the students who committed to this program and has shown their support by employing them in meaningful positions for the summer.”

START [Skills, Tasks & Results Training] began on March 8 and ended May 14th, was held at the Bermuda College, which partnered with BHI through the complimentary use of its facilities. The program, taught by instructors Shawn DeShields, Hospitality/Business Senior Lecturer, Bermuda College, and Joann Adams, Director Staff Development, Berkeley Institute, provided a quality career based educational experience that prepared each student for the vast opportunities available in hospitality industry.

The students are Satori Brangman – Server – Barracuda Grill, Kyle McNeil – Kitchen Trainee – La Coquille at Tucker’s Point, Kurt Scott – Host/Server Assistant – Pickled Onion, Raven White – Kitchen Porter/ Cook’s Helper – Pickled Onion & Latin, Shaylee Weeks – Waitress – St. George’s Club, Princine Bailey – Mini-Bar Attendant – Tuckers Point, Chyone Harris – Beach Attendant – Elbow Beach, Mintwa Trott – Spa Attendant – Elbow Beach, Holly DeSilva – Discover Bermuda Team Member – Fairmont Southampton, Shannon Talbot – Discover Bermuda Team Member – Fairmont Southampton, Ateunae Rewan – Expediter – Snorkel Park, Christina Hoban – Beach Attendant – Snorkel Park, Jahde Rabain – Front Office/PBX – The Reefs, Kalea Steede – Lobby Greeter – Fairmont Hamilton, Nathan Simmons – Host/Hostess F&B – Fairmont Hamilton, Zakiya Furbert – Room Attendant – Pompano, Traynario Wright – Order Selector – Butterfield & Vallis.

“One of the most exciting elements of this program is that after 90 days on the job, each student will be certified in one of AHLEI’s internationally recognized areas of certification,” said Ms. Lacey. “It puts them at the front of the line for opportunities and is a foundation on which they can build a career.”

“Over the coming decades, this group will mature into individuals who will play a key role in Bermuda’s Hospitality Industry,” said Ms. Lacey. “Whether as leaders or supporters, the experience they’re gaining now will eventually reverberate throughout our community.”
