ACE Foundation Announce Scholarship Awards

July 12, 2011

The 2011 Robert Clements/ACE Scholarship has been awarded to Andrew Fleming. Andrew, a 17-year old CedarBridge Academy graduate was selected out of 51 candidates for the award. With a near perfect grade point average of 3.98, the highest GPA in the history of CedarBridge, Andrew will commence a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Economics at Mount St Vincent University in September. On completion of his degree Andrew plans to return to Bermuda to pursue a career in the insurance industry as an underwriter.

Andrew’s academic accomplishments are numerous and include earning principal’s honours throughout his time at Cedarbridge Academy, the highest honour status given to students. He also received the Principal’s Cup, the most coveted and prestigious award given to the student who exemplifies excellence in academics, leadership, service, school and community involvement. As a result of his academic performance Andrew gained membership into the National Honour Society. Andrew was also named Valedictorian for the 2011 graduating class.

In addition to his academic achievements, Andrew held many positions of leadership as prefect, head boy, PTSA executive student representative, section leader and public relations officer for the CedarBridge Academy chamber choir, and as a mentor to younger students at the school. He was a member of the debate team and participated in the Bermuda Business charity challenge for high school students.

Andrew leads by example, and during his time at CedarBridge he could be found at the entrance to the school each morning at 7.45am to greet, encourage and challenge his fellow students to achieve their academic goals.

Lori Samson, Trustee of the ACE Foundation – Bermuda said, “As you can imagine, with so many talented candidates, choosing a single scholar was a difficult process for the scholarship selection committee. Andrew is an accomplished individual and has proven to be an outstanding ambassador for CedarBridge Academy and role model to fellow students. We are extremely proud to welcome Andrew as the 2011 Robert Clements/ACE Scholar. I have every confidence that he will achieve his career goals.”

Since its establishment in 1996 the Robert Clements/ACE Scholarship has provided financial support to over 20 Bermudian university students enabling them to complete their studies in insurance related degree programs and to pursue careers in the international insurance industry.

The fully-funded scholarship is awarded to qualified students studying full-time towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in insurance, risk management, actuarial science or other disciplines related to the insurance industry. As part of the scholarship, students are offered employment opportunities during the holidays providing them with relevant work experience. A condition of the scholarship is that recipients must be willing to return to Bermuda on completion of their studies to pursue their career.

The 2011 ACE/Bermuda College Education Award has been awarded to Teleza Pitcher. Teleza graduated from the Bermuda College in May with an Associate of Science Degree in Biology. She entered Bermuda College as its Corange Science Book Award recipient, which rewards excellence in the sciences and mathematics.

Teleza has been accepted to Howard University and plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. Her career goal in her own words “is to become a dentist and return to Bermuda to make a difference in the smiles of many.” Teleza has spent the past two summers interning as a dental assistant and took advantage of work shadowing opportunities while at school to ensure it was the right career choice for her to pursue.

During her free time Teleza volunteers as a Pink Lady for The Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda, she has been an active member of Bermuda Girl Guiding Association for over 10 years, and she achieved the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award while a student at the Berkeley Institute.

Samantha Froud, Chief Administration Officer, Bermuda Group, and member of the ACE Bermuda College Education Award selection committee said, “I was extremely impressed with the caliber of the candidates we interviewed this year. They were all passionate, determined and focused on their goals. Teleza has already shown her commitment to the field of dentistry and we are delighted to be able to assist her in pursuing her career goals.”

ACE Group and Bermuda College formed a partnership in 2008 with the goal of helping students understand the connection between their studies and the workplace. One component of this partnership is the ACE/Bermuda College Education Award, which offers Bermuda College graduates an opportunity to continue their undergraduate studies overseas.

The Education Award of $15,000 covers tuition and fees for up to two years. Since inception, four Bermudian students have benefited from this education award. As part of the scholarship, students are offered employment opportunities during the holidays providing them with relevant work experience.

  2. B, a Lady says:

Kudos to the recipients for your hard work and dedication to academics. Best of luck as you pursue your studies.

Does anyone find it funny that there are more Administrators in the picture than scholarhip recipients? Overdone, for sure. When will we let our kids shine instead of us looking for credit and a photo op? Move aside and give young people their day. Let the focus be on them entirely. Scholarship season should be about the gifted student rather than a host of company personnel. Give quietly and graciously, as so many fine companies have done for so many years.

Nope…it is clear to me who the recipients are… and as you said kudos to them…

  3. College Graduate says:

    Congrats T

  4. Free Thinker (Original) says:

Well done, but when are we a society going to recognize other forms of intelligence, especially the mechanically and artistic gifted. When we start putting them on a pedestal in the manner, we do our Academically gifted, we will have less of them joining gangs to fill those voids left society.

  5. H. A. Richardson says:

Congratulations to each of the receipients!! It is particularly gratifying to note that both of them are products of Bermuda’s public education system (Port Royal, Sandys, Cedarbridge, Victor Scott, Whitney and Berkeley). Kudos also to ACE since they are offering more than money. The opportunity for the recipients to work during breaks will be invaluable to their development as future citizens of Bermuda. Well done also to their parents – I am sure thier success would not have been possible without family support.

    • RME says:

I was thinking the exact same thing!! Great things do come out of our public system as well!

  6. Adele White says:

  7. Truth (Original) says:

I am very proud of the both of you. Keep striving for excellence and I promise that it will be found in you.

  8. Colorful Heart says:

Congrats Andrew and Teleza, well done. @ B, a lday – I think having a photo with the individuals involved here is more than appropriate. Is there not a HUGE photo of only the recipients as well? Not unless the photo was added after your comment. Keep in mind that Dr. Greene is the President of Bermuda College and Ms. Richards is the Principal of Cedarbridge. That leaves four individuals from ACE, all of whom are very instrumental in the selection process and development of our young people. Having them in the photo with their name noted may open up an opportunity for someone else. I think your comment is petty and unnecessary. Andrew and Teleza I wish you all the best!

    • Hudson says:

agree with you 100%. Well done to the recipients, and hats off to Ace for providing them the opportunity.

  9. Organic Bermudian says:

    Congratulations Andrew
