Duke of Edinburgh Participants Head to Germany
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Bermuda will partner with Das Internationale Jugendprogramm [the Award Programme in Germany] for the 2011 Overseas Qualifying Journey/Residential Project for Gold Participants.
Lead by Award Leader Sonia Waldron and Award Chair Kenneth Bartram, both Gold Alumni themselves, 28 participants will head to Germany from July 29th to August 14th, where they will face the joys and challenges of a true outdoor adventure.
Known otherwise as the 2011 International Award Summer School [IASS], this event also provides opportunities for Award Leaders to continue their Award Training, and there will be six attending the event from Bermuda. They will be able to choose between two 5-day Leadership Courses in Expedition/Award Assessment or Award Management to enhance their Award knowledge and skills.
During their two weeks in Germany, the participants will spend time in the cities of Heidelberg and Osterburken in western Germany and the expedition will take place in Naturpark Sudschwarzwald in the famous Black Forest. In this forest they will explore The Feldberg which is actually the highest elevation of the mountain range in the Black Forest at 4,898 feet.
It has been six months since both participants and leaders began expedition and physical training in preparation for the intense journey that lie ahead. In fact, they joined the Walking Club of Bermuda, learned first aid and expedition skills, staged overnight practice camps and even participated in the annual End-to-End Charity Walk with their full rucksacks on [pictured below].
