Hogges Win First Road Game Of Season
The Bermuda Hogges Football Club started off on the right track when they beat New Jersey Rangers 3-0 in their first of four matches on the east coast of the United States in the USL Soccer Premier Development League.
Zico Lewis scored in the 78th minute to give the Hogges the lead. Prior to the half, Hogges were awarded a penalty, however Damon Ming was unlucky when his shot hit the crossbar and went over the top.
Substitute Shakir Smith made it 2-nil in the 84th minute, after coming on for Lashun Dill in the 72nd minute. Team Captain Wayne Bean made 3-nil in the 85th minute to the seal victory. Meanwhile 16 year old Willie Clemons made his debut in the 88th minute.
Maurice Lowe, Head Coach of the Hogges said, “This is a step in our process, speaks well to the quality of our young players. They have answered the call to this level, they are making us better. Zico brings a natural left sided player, this has opened our attack. Clearly he demonstrates quality and class, and its no secret he loves too score goals.”
Assistant coach Gary Darrell added, “one win can make a psychological difference to a team. Last weeks victory has lifted the teams performance. We want to carry this momentum in our next game Sunday evening.”
Hogges will now play their second of four matches Sunday night against Ocean City Nor Easters, starting 6pm EST.

If the idea is to have all of our best players overseas and RATHER THAN improve the game on the Island generally….then the benefits are clear….
Again the stats tell the story..the Hogges didn’t manage a win before they could deploy a full complement of players based off island? What does that tell us?
That tells us that we have “outsourced” player development. If that’s our player development model and if our ability to field a competitive team is based on the availability of non-island based players – so be it.
Heck no need to have a national academy then :>)
Should I point out that countries like Argentina and Brazil have explored the domestic versus overseas players conundrum and that the general conclusion is that being over reliant on players based overseas is not conducive to a healthy and sustainable national programme?
Don’t get me wrong, I would (and do) encourage individual players to pursue educational and professional opportunities, however this largely a personal matter and cannot/should not be the cornerstone of out player development model at a national level.
For example having our premier league champions make it past the qualifying round of the CFU champions league would be a much better barometer of the game locally…
While you ponder that Ross, I can go a step further and point out that none of the overseas based players who are now contributing to the Hogges success were ever in the National Academy in any meaningful way.
Shock and horror I know, but these players recieved their (local) football education from the clubs along with the support of their families and along with their inate physical and mental abilities.
It follows that, left to their own devices (subject to support from the BFA) our clubs are perfectly capable of turning out players who are capable of playing at a higher level.
So in a sense to trumpet the value non-island based players is to aruge AGAINST interference from the BFA.

The Brazil/ Argentina comment succinctly highlights what we are dealing with here Frankie,i.e. a real lack of football nous.. Both countries continue to produce excellent players in numbers and one could argue that if a European coach had managed both in the last World Cup they might have been playing each other in the finals. Maradonna and Dunga were considered by many experts as poor managers and their team selection and tactics were at best, 2nd rate. Second rate as in what we saw at the PHC prior to Lightbourne and Colts prior to their current coach.. No,that isn’t fair to Dunga and the Argie. It is more like not rated at all…
Note that it was the former Exec that budgeted for club representation in the CFU tournament. The same Exec developed the relationship with the Hogges and insisted that they play at the younger age level and placed a national coach in charge of the team. The very same Exec ensured that winning the league was important and that reducing competitions was required to ensure that coaches had time to coach. It was the same Exec that wanted multiple layers of coach education and wanted Broadley to spend as much time at the BFA Academy as he did at club grounds, instructing club coaches. In defence of Broadley, many coaches frowned on his involvement with their clubs and despite his many short comings, he is a significantly better coach than the vast majority of our local coaches.
As for outsourcing development, I have to say that any help that the BFA can obtain from overseas contacts, at a cost that is acceptable and in a manner that works harmoniously with our national objectives, should not be frowned on, given the inadequate coaching that our kids are exposed to in general..

What has the national academy to do with the clear and obvious benefits of young players gaining opportunities at US Prep Schools and Colleges? This has been the case for years and one can easily and correctly say that in our best days ( 1970′s / early eighties ) we had many players overseas in Univ and at professional teams and we were at our very best internationally.
I think we started this topic by debating the merits of a holistic and forward thinking BFA Plan and in doing so I highlighted the fact that players gaining assistance via scholarships, college showcase tours and prep tours was a significant component of the former Exces plan and had resulted in multiple scholarships being offered.

At no time was there any discussion about the merits of the academy, in fact quite the opposite, in that Broadley was considered a failure, and as such, the work done at the academy was not highly regarded.
Further read the former plan and see the many, many references to improving club football, to include admin , coaching , fields and safety…The former Exec clearly stated that football can’t be improved at the national level without significant improvement at the club level, hence the reason for wanting to see the back of Broadley and replacing him with a very highly regarded, world class coach educator in the form of J Crevossier.
Finally you are seriously deluded if you believe that our clubs are doing a good job producing talented players in numbers. The level of club football over the past 5- 10 years has been poor and surely even someone that clearly lacks football nous can see the merit in that statement. Again, don’t rely on me, ask anyone that has no bias and sees the game for what it truely has become under very poor local club coaches. There are exceptions, however far to few to impact the league as a whole.

So according to you we are left with a great plan, poorly executed, though no questions are to be asked of the (former) executive who designed and implemented the plan. Some of whom where on the PDC that recommended the former TD. The same people who quit mid term.
The preceding is accompanied with complaints as to the length of time its taken for the current (new) executive to figure out (and announce) just how badly we have been conned and how to navigate us out of this mess.
We begrudgingly accept that results are poorer since the plan was rolled out and implemented but are keen to clarify that that doesn’t mean that we had been doing anything right prior to being blessed with the 2008 strategic plan.
And you want to want to talk about bias?
I hold everyone to the same standard. The current (new) executive deserves some time (lets say the fall BFA meetings) to get a handle on the mess give the football community their views.

The chair of that comm and many of those members were not present when Broadley was selected. Crevossier was the identified replacement and even you can see how well
that is working out over at Saltus..
Again and for the final time, sitting on a board and completing little to nothing worth mentioning is simply occupying a seat..I point to the current Exec of the BFA and the do nothing , achieve nothing execs at the once proud D Colts and PHC as proof that this is indeed who you are…
As for needing time to produce a plan..seriously in the real world you would have been fired.
Once again..was the former head coach of the 2008 youth national suspended for threatening a ref and Broadley. Was it the same coach that was escorted from the field of play while representing BDA?

There is nothing and I mean nada in your rants that remotely suggest that you are either deceptive or skillful..it is more avoidance and an inability to accept your poor performance as an admin and coach.. the road to redemption starts with admitting your shortcomings..
