Live Blogging: Cup Match Day #1

[Updated- First day of play over: Somerset 97 & 39/1 St George's 188.] Locals are making their way into St George’s Cricket Club and camp sites can be seen from east to west, as the first day of the 2011 Cup Match Holiday gets underway today [July 28].

The Bermuda Weather Service predicts today will experience: “One or two showers will linger behind an early morning trough, then a few showers arrive by this evening as a weakening cold front stalls over the area. Some of the showers will be heavier at times and will not ease until later Friday afternoon.”

Starting from the eve of the annual Cup Match Classic, Bermudians are starting to get into the spirit on the micro-blogging network Twitter, with the hashtag #CupMatch growing in popularity. The tweets below will continuosly update in real time, providing you with the latest Cup Match related tweets.

We are restricted from live streaming and other aspects of coverage, but will update as able and you can also tune into the television for live coverage, or 1450AM or 89FM for live radio coverage.

Update 8:30pm: It appears there was another incident at BeachFest – girls fighting – and the event will be shutting down early. It was scheduled to go to late night.

St. George’s Cricket Club will look to press home their advantage after dominating the first day’s play at the Annual Cup Match Classic at Wellington Oval today.

Somerset, who won the toss, elected to bat and could only muster 97 runs in their first innings as they failed to come to grips with the pace of Justin Pitcher (5-42) and Stefan Kelly (4-26).

In reply, St George’s made 188 giving them a lead on first innings of 91 runs. This lead was achieved in spite of excellent bowling performances from Somerset’s Kevin Hurdle (5-38) and Janeiro Tucker (4-7). Top scorers for St George’s were Jason Anderson (52), Lionel Cann (38) and OJ Pitcher (26).

Dion Stovell was first to go for one when a Damali Bell ball outside the off stump, saw him get a top edge and was caught by Oronde Bascome running from his slips position to take the catch over his shoulder.

Stephen Outerbridge was next to go when he attempted to hook a Justin Pitcher delivery and was caught on the boundary by Bell without scoring.

Terryn Fray after being dropped by Pitcher off his own bowling, was out the very next ball when he got an edge and was taken by Jason Anderson.

When former Somerset Cup Match captain Janeiro Tucker attempted to dig one out and the ball flew to Rodney Trott the rot was starting to set in for the challengers.

To add to the challenger’s misery Kamau Leverock and Malachi Jones both got ducks trying to hit the ball out of the ground, while Jacobi Robinson who was swinging from the first ball he faced was bowled by Kelly for the top score of 17.

A 15 run partnership at the end between Joshua Gilbert and Kevin Hurdle saw Somerset move from 82/9 to 97, before Hurdle was the last man out just before lunch.

Justin Pitcher took five wickets to lead the St. George’s Cricket Club bowling attack, while Stefan Kelly took four wickets and Damali Bell grabbed one.

In reply the St. George’s Cricket Club were bowled all out for 188, a first innings lead of 91 runs.

Jason Anderson was the top scorer with 52, while Lionel Cann added 38, Kevin Hurdle took five wickets to lead the Somerset Cricket Club bowling attack, while Janeiro Tucker took four wickets for just seven runs as Somerset battled back at the end of the first day of Cup Match.

Somerset had to bat the final hour looking not to lose a wicket however that plan was not to be as Dion Stovell was bowled by Kelly for one, Fray finished on 31 and Outerbridge on 7 seeing Somerset to the close of play at 39/1.

The match resumes tomorrow at 10:00am.

Update 7:00pm: There appears to be another person passed out at Horseshoe Bay, they are presently being attended to by police officers, and EMTs are heading in their direction.

Update 5:45pm: An ambulance is on scene at Horseshoe Bay, we unofficially understand that a man may have passed out.

Update 5:36pm: ZBM reports that Somerset player Jacobi Robinson has possibly broken his hand – and may not return to the game.

Update 5:20pm: Police responded to a disturbance that took place in the area of the BeachFest Celebrations at Horseshoe Bay. Police confirm that two people have been arrested, and a heavy police presence remains. In the meantime in the east, Zing reports that St George’s 165-6. Lionel Cann bowled out by Tucker for 38 runs.

Update 3:48pm: Rodney Trott is out, St George’s is 111-4. OJ Pitcher and Lionel Cann are now batting.

Update 3:25pm Jason Anderson has a half century, which saw a brief spurt of celebrations on the pitch. St George’s have passed Somerset’s total of 97, with 99-2.

Update 1:02pm: There is no shortage of people at Horseshoe Bay for the Beachfest Celebrations taking place there today. The Entertainment stage is being prepared as performers are due to start shortly. Areas are sectioned off for the public to enjoy playing football or volleyball. Update 10:30am: From Zing: “Somerset 17-2. Stephen Outerbridge caught Douglas bowled Pitcher for a duck (0).” Deunte Darrell, last years’s MVP, is now batting. He was in a bike accident on Monday, but was cleared to play.

Update 10:04am: The Premier and Governor are greeting all the players on the field. Premier Cox is wearing a red and blue hat, which speaks volumes on this day of course.

Update 10:00am: Somerset win toss and elected to bat. The teams are making their way to the field, lead by their Captains.

Update 7:30am: Early morning attendees are steadily trickling into St George’s Cricket Club, and are passing through a metal detector, as well as a bag search area. The police can be seen out, with the mobile unit parked by the entrance of the club.
