Local Swimmers At World Champs In China
Julian Fletcher, Roy-Allan Burch and Kiera Aitken are representing Bermuda in 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. The 2011 World Championships, which ends on July 31, features athletes from over 70 nations competing in five aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, open water, and synchronized swimming.
National Coach Ben Smith said, “Bermuda will have 3 of their best athletes competing in Shanghai over an 8 day Championships that has gathered the best swimmers from around the globe. This meet will be the showcase for swimming as everyone begins preparation for the London games.”
“Our three swimmers have been a part of this process and are looking forward to the test. We arrived on the 15th of July to make sure that the athletes were accustomed to the time change, food changes and were physically prepared after the long travel. They have looked very strong in the practices and are focused on swimming best performances.”
Julian Fletcher will be competing in the 100m breaststroke on July 24th and in the 50m breaststroke on Day 3 July 26th.
Roy-Allan Burch will be competing in the 100m freestyle on July 27th and the 50m freestyle on July 29th.
Kiera Aitken – Bermuda’s most experienced swimmer at this level – will be competing in the 100 backstroke on July 25th, 50m backstroke July 27th , 100m freestyle on July 28th and 50m freestyle on July 30th.
