Photos: Spectators At 2011 Cup Match

July 30, 2011

Thousands of locals packed the Wellington Oval over the past two days [July 28/29] to enjoy the Annual Cup Match Classic, considered the premier local sporting event by most locals. Apart from the action packed cricket game, Cup Match always offers a high spirited atmosphere, with many locals dressed to impress and/or sporting team colours.

Crowds flocked to St. Georges Cricket Club by land and sea, with some spectators arriving by boat and walking to the field in their swimsuits. Some spectators were glued to the cricket, while others enjoyed the atmosphere and bounced between different “camps” that lined the field.

Before Cup Match the Bermuda Monetary Authority said that $130.8 million of Bermuda Dollar notes and coins would be in circulation over the holiday, and some of that currency made its way to the traditional Cup Match crown and anchor tables along with the food vendors, who were kept busy both days with thirsty and hungry customers.

As the game intensified yesterday afternoon traffic lined the streets leading to the Club. The excitement in the air was unmistakable as the afternoon play looked sure to produce a result breaking a four year streak of consecutive draws. Fans of both sides were enthralled by the action packed game, which saw plenty of twists and turns before St George’s finally claimed the win and the bragging rights that go along with it.
