Upcoming: Beat The Retreat on Front Street
On Wednesday, July 20, 2011 the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band and lady dancers and the Band and Corps of Drums of the Bermuda Regiment present their midsummer Beating Retreat at the Flag Pole on Front Street. The parade will begin at 9:00 p.m.
The Guest of Honour for the evening will be the Honourary Colonel of the Bermuda Regiment, Colonel Eugene Raynor.
In advance of the Cup Match festivities, the Regiment Band have prepared some movie themes and a little Motown: Pirates of the Caribbean, music from the Titanic—played jointly with the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band—and In the Stone, by the Elements—Earth, Wind, and Fire, who performed here in Bermuda a few years ago at the Bermuda Music Festival.
The Bermuda Islands Pipe Band add a bit of Scottish flair to the performance. They will also mix a little bit of calypso in with their performance alongside the Bermuda Regiment Band. Their dancers will dance a Scottish Lilt and the Highland Fling before they march off with a tune, specially written, called “Pink Sands of Bermuda.”
The two musical units will work independently and collaboratively to provide the audience with an entertaining close to the day.
Col. Raynor, the sixth Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment and the first black Commanding Officer, provides consultative support to the Bermuda Regiment. He also sits on the Bermuda Regiment’s Defence Board—an advisory group to the Commanding Officer. He will receive the salute as the Massed Bands march off parade at the end of the evening.
Lieutenant Colonel Gonsalves adds, “The Beating of the Retreats and other musical events are just some of the ways that the Bermuda Regiment supports the Bermudian Community; furthermore all members of the Regimental Band are serving soldiers, and almost all of them are volunteers. During emergencies and embodiments all members of the Band take on further operational roles supporting the Regiment in assisting the needs of the Island. They are Service people that demonstrate professional qualities in their musical and soldiering commitments to the Regiment. We are fortunate to have individuals like these who have chosen to serve the public.”
