July 15, 2011

montpensier-lr-crop (2)A hilarious, heartfelt documentary about Star Wars fans and their love-hate relationship with the film’s director, George Lucas, and a lush French romantic drama are the featured films at the ‘Weekend Film Series’ this coming Sunday, July 17 in the Tradewinds Auditorium at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI).

The People vs. George Lucas will screen at 3 p.m. on Sunday, while The Princess of Montpensier will screen at 5.15 p.m.

The passion that the original Star Wars trilogy inspires is unparalleled – but when it comes to George Lucas himself, many have found that their ardour has cooled into a complicated love-hate relationship. This documentary, which has screened at some 25 festivals worldwide, includes interviews with Star Wars fanatics, authors, filmmakers and cultural observers as well as extraordinary Star Wars and Indiana Jones fan-film re-creations, songs, needlepoint, Lego and Claymation, puppets and papier mache. Above all, the film asks the question – who owns that galaxy far, far away – the man who created it, or the fans who worship it?

In The Princess of Montpensier, beautiful young aristocrat Marie de Montpensier contemplates the terrible conflict between duty and passion in this riveting, lush romantic drama set in the high courts of 16th century France. Sexy, entertaining and visually stunning, this adaptation of Madame de Lafayette’s 1622 novella is set against the backdrop of the Catholic/Protestant wars. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and is now in theatrical release.

Tickets, $15, can be purchased in the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 297-7314. Trailers of the films can be viewed at www.bermudadocs.com. The ‘Weekend Film Series’, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.
