Coral Spawn Seen On West End Beach
Yesterday [Aug.21] parts of Bermuda’s famous turquoise waters took on the pinkish tones of coral spawn, and Ralph Richardson captured photos of the spawning – which shows the coral reefs are reproducing – on a west end beach. The photos below were taken on the western shoreline of Bermuda, between Spring Benny and Wreck Hill.
Last year a Department of Environmental Protection said, “Members of the public are advised that the spawn is nothing to be concerned about and is actually a good sign as the coral reefs are reproducing and the spawn will go on to form new corals around the island.”
In 2009 the reddish spawn was very visible, prompting locals to fear some form of environmental disaster, with the Aquarium, Department of Environmental Protection and the Bio Station all receiving calls from concerned citizens.
Last year a monetary value was placed on our protective reefs — calculating they provided hundreds of millions of dollars each year in direct economic benefits through coastal protection from storms and hurricanes, as well as supporting both the tourism industry and commercial and recreational fisheries.

wow, didn’t know this….maybe its time to introduce an ecology course to the school systems. adds new meaning to pink and blue
Great to see the reefs are reproducing. Very funny that people were afraid it was something wrong. I hope nobody swam in it. Sounds nasty.
The coral spawn probably says the same about us when we get our grove on-LOL.
Since we have healthy coral reefs, and I understand that the coral at several islands to the south has died or is in danger of dying, is this not an area that we can use as a tourist attraction? Even more so, since someone has put a monetary value on it?
My only advice would be to stay away if you have an open cut. I have heard of people having bits of coral growing in their wounds.
Right…..
you watch too much movies.. Pirates of the Carribean? *lol
Talk about motion of the ocean!! Bomchickabowow!!
We dove through it once, collected samples and viewed through a microscope. Never heard of the growing in open skin problem. Is there are credible evidence on this?
If what ‘T Smith’ says is correct” Shouldn’t a notice need to be erected at places like Church Bay. Tourist snorkel there quite often because of the great reefs there. Maybe an ocean enviornmentalist can help us out with this question. I think the photos are beautiful!
…people coral does not grow in your flesh… come on…. >.<
i’m not an environmentalist, i just have common sense.
