Cycling: Mayho Continues Winning Ways
2011 Junior Caribbean Cycling Champion Dominique Mayho (Team Madison) scored an impressive win in Sunday’s Adult A category in the IBC Criterium Series race in Hamilton, lapping the entire field.
Mayho, who will head to Isle of Man next week for the Commonwealth Youth Games along with Tre-shun Correia (Winners Edge), surprised everyone with a blistering attack from the start of the race and was only joined by Correia.
Though his partner was not able to stay with him, Mayho made enough of an effort to catch the chasing group on the 1 kilometer course. At the end of the 45 minute criterium Mayho confidently crossed the finish line while the sprint for the remaining places was still an minute and a half behind. Darren Glasford (Winners Edge) and Brian Drea (Team Madison) finish second and third, respectively.
The Adult B race was won by Johan Vivier (Team Tokio) who outlasted the dwindling pack. Anthony Bartley (Crime Stoppers) continued to impress the group with his improving fitness and was rewarded with a convincing second place. Norbert Meyer (Fast Forward Freight Bicycle Works) finished third.
In the combined Adult C and Junior group neo-road racer Dirk Hassellkust left the rest of the field to chase around the course. Ian Pilgrim took a strong second place with Nigel Godfrey rounding out the podium.
The juniors mixed it up with the adults for the first half of the race and eventually the sprint came down to Daniel Oatley besting Rico Smith and Molly Pilgrim, Bermuda’s double gold medalist from the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championship in Puerto Rico two weeks ago. The Junior B and C races were won by Alex Pilgrim and Jayden Ming.
The Bermuda Bicycle Association’s next race is a road race starting in Southside, St. David’s on September 4th, beginning at 8:00AM. The full race results are below:
