Private Cars Flying Pink & Blue Ribbons
This morning [Aug.18] some private cars are flying pink & blue ribbons to signify they are willing to help transport others while the buses are on strike.
Demco Florists on South Road in Devonshire are handing out ribbons for free today in support of the movement, which is being organized online via a Facebook page. Demco opened their doors at 8:45am and started preparing the ribbon combinations.
Yesterday [Aug.17] Bus Operators and Allied Workers Division of the Bermuda Industrial Union agreed to strike after their colleague Jennifer Harvey was fired for “gross insubordination”.
The Ministry of Transport said Ms Harvey was to blame for an accident that caused injuty to a passenger’s hand, and she subsequently refused on five occasions to submit to a drug test.
Thus far in our 24-hour poll, approximately 90% of respondents signified they do not agree with the bus drivers decision to strike.
Update 12:30pm: Demco said they have handed out at least 100 sets of ribbons at this time, with some people coming in to do ‘group pickups’ – collecting ribbons for other people in their the office.

The facebook page “Help give a ride to work Bermuda” has been posted on Cruise Critic.
A Community in crisis pulling together.
Keep safe everyone. Let’s Pray for a speedy
recovery.
Just shows how the community can stick together for what is right, keep the spirit going Bermuda!
This is one example of true Bermudian spirit! I commend the person(s) who came up with this idea. Furthermore agree with the fact that we (the people of Bermuda and the government of Bermuda) should not give in to such disobedience and disregard for the workplace. I hear that there is going to be a rally in front of City Hall today at 12 to show our support not to give in to the BUI regarding this matter.
This sounds like a good idea! A email needs to be sent around to all businesses so everyone turns out. The bigger the crowds the better! We need to show the government and the union we will not be held hostage. I will do my best to be there!
Way to go Demco and all Bermudians who are helping out, you’ve done us proud! Xx!
Thank you citizens of Bermuda for continuing to show our visitors that we are indeed “another world”! We must as Bermudians strive to save our tourism trade even if others dont care about it and prove once again that Bermudians are the friendliest and most caring people you would ever meet. I am sure a lot of visitors will go home remembering the nice people that helped them and made their vacation special during a bus strike!
PROUD TO BE A BERMUDIAN!!!!!!NOT A HOME GROWN TERRORIST (FURBERT AND CO.)!!!!!!!!!!
I was just saying that Chris Furbert is a terrorist Lol.
Maybe the gas stations could come on board and discount thier gas for cars flying pink and blue ribbons who are transporting locals & tourists and are car-pooling. Just a thought.
A great thought, hope they offer !
Brilliant! Bermuda pulling together to help out when such nonsense happens…fire all of them and hire foreigners or other Bermudians who will actually work! Hope government doesn’t give in to the BUI’s pettiness.
Great idea! To bad I make 8:30.
Way to go DEMCO! You will be remembered next time people want to buy flowers.
Yes I know I will remember where to buy flowers next time I need to send some…thanks for doing something good for our economy!
Demco did step in and offer free ribbons, but it is totally not true that this idea to fly ribbons was Demco idea as Bermuda Sun is now implying.
The idea to fly ribbons was suggested by a young lady on the said Facebook page and others agreed it was a great idea. That was when Demco stepped in and said they will offer the ribbons free to those wishing to fly them.
Just feel credit should be given where due since people believe that it was Demco idea for people to use their ribbons on their cars.
Do these bus drivers realize how many people are out of work and will GLADLY take their places in efforts to pick up the pieces in their life that fell apart due to the recession?
DPT FIRE THEM ALL AND PUT IN THE JOB ADVERTISMENT “NEED DEDICATED INDIVIDUALS WHO VALUE WHAT IS RIGHT AND WHO RISE ABOVE THE FOOLISHNESS!”
What point are they proving by not working? Besides the obvious point of “Will take a day off whenever i can, for whatever reason they can come up with” smh
I am really happy to see people coming together and helping each other out. More importantly, I am glad to finally see the Bermudian public take a stand against these unionized terrorist and their cell leader Chris Furbert. Let’s all show them that we are tired of their sh*t and that it’s time for them to go.
We picked up a family travelling to Horseshoe Beach. They are passengers off the cruise ship. It was actually kinda fun getting to know them during the brief ride. They have our cell no. and we told them we would come get them once they have had their fill of the beach. I also saw some busdrivers (well they had their uniform on) picking up visitors and locals in their private cars. Hmmmmmmmmmmm
Thanks Somerset Girl and those bus drivers doing their bit! I am sure you are very much appreciated by those you are helping! Isnt it great to be a Bermudian!
Thats so fantasic to hear. The good of Bermudians is not lost during this time. You all have so much good karma coming to you, please keep it up!
Wow! You are a true ambassador for Bermuda. Well done.
Hey all you Bermudians helping out the tourists and locals get from Point A to Point B…better head to Horshoe Bay and some of the other south shore beaches as we are expecting lighting and thunder this afternoon with possible down pour and these nice visitors will have no way to get back to the ship – will need lots of vehicles to check these areas..getting over cast now and heard first rumble of thunder. Be safe everyone!
My DB (dearly beloved) just came in the door with two retired couples from Toronto, all holding bags of goodies they picked up at Miles and we’re having lunch. They were picked up at a bus stop near the Hamilton Princess, looking quite confused and disgruntled as they didn’t know about the bus strike. They wanted to go to Dockyard for lunch, so DB invited them to lunch at our house instead and they ponied up for the food and here we are. Now I can get all the gossip on Toronto, one of my favourite cities. DB doesn’t imbibe, so we can drive them to Dockyard, or wherever they might want to go, after we’ve had a bite. Pass the margaritas, por favor!!! If there’s a sunny side to this bus strike fiasco, I think we’re experiencing it this very moment. We plan on going out tomorrow to round up anyone we see looking for a ride…a great way to meet new people and reacquaint ourselves with seldom seen neighbours. If any of you out there see any bus drivers picking up people in their private vehicles, give them a big HONK and a thumbs up! It’s wonderful to see so many of them doing the right thing.
Onion soup, I’m smiling as I read that. Good for you, as a bartender I get to meet quite a few incredible people, some who even become friends for life. Good for you hun, tons of good karma coming your way.
Torontonian here! Thanks for helping out a felow Canadian! WE LOVE YOU BERMUDA!
Wow, this is such a great feeling to read how Bermudians are pulling together to do everything they can to help stranded people (locals and visitors alike). This is the Bermudian hospitality that we have been missing for a LONG time. Way to go!!! If I didn’t have to sit at my desk, I’d be out there too!
This is a good idea and I am glad that people are willing to help. The only problem I have with this is that by offering free rides this is taking away from taxi drivers…my opinion…i’m just saying
It may be taking away from taxi drivers, but the reason these people take the bus is because taxis are far too expensive. If they were smart they would offer reduced fares
I do not wish to hurt the taxi drive in anyway. In a time of need when there are ships in and locals trying there best to stay employed to get to work I think the taxi drivers will understand. Think of this as a visitor you buy a bus pass & leave your belongings on ship/hotel. Then go to the beach for the day only to find out while standing at the bus stop that there are no buses & you ship leaves in 2 hours, I hope you or I never have to experience that!!!!!!
This is true and I understand where you all are coming from. I only said this because I was at the beach on wednesday, on my day off and as i was heading back to my car a lady came down to give the tourists a ride. These tourists were about to get in a taxi when this lady comes offering them a free ride. There was then a confrontation between the taxi driver and the lady basically stole his fare. I say that to say this, If she was offering free rides she should have went to the busstop at the top of the hill. There were loads of tourists waiting at the bus stop. She should have left the passengers at the bottom to ride with the taxi
God bless Bermuda and its PEOPLE !
Proud to be a Bermudian.. This is phenomenal! Grest job everyone
Heyyyyy i was offering a ride and i stop at the bus terminal in town, and one guy very rude push me out of there!!!!! becuase was only for buses!!!, I told him there wasnt buses! and the guy call the police to pass me a ticket!!!!!! at the moment I dont know if i got a ticket, i will know maybe tomorrow!!!!! BUT WHAT THEW HELL!!!! I TRY TO HELP AND THEY DONT WANTS US TO STOP THERE! WHERE THE PUBLIC WAS LOOKING FOR A RIDE!!!
Bermuda has always had these great Ambassadors to help out at such times as these. I remember 1981, thanks BIU, when the same happened. Bermuda is atill another world when BS and politics are taken out of the picture. FUBIU
so it takes a bus strike for people to become nice ot one another again?
i wonder if they only picking up visitors or locals
