Ophelia: ‘Potential Threat’ To Bermuda

[Updated] The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] said that Tropical Depression Ophelia is a ‘potential threat’ to Bermuda, and its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is forecast to be 254 nm to the south south-east at 6am on Saturday October 1st.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph [55 km/h] with higher gusts. Slow strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days and Ophelia is expected to become a Tropical Storm again later today.”

Update 12:18pm: Ophelia is now a Tropical Storm

Update Sept. 29, 7am The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Ophelia is expected to be a hurricane on Friday. The BWS said its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is now forecast to be 148 nm to the ESE at 3pm on Saturday October 1.

“Strong winds, showery rain and thunder can be expected for the weekend as Ophelia, forecast to be a category 1 hurricane by then, passes by about 140 miles to our east,” said the BWS.
