Digicel Sponsors Charity Keelboat Regatta

October 20, 2011

Digicel Bermuda announced its title sponsorship of the 2nd Annual Digicel Cabbage Patch Charity Keelboat Regatta in partnership with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club [RBYC].

Started in 2010, the aim is for the sailing community to raise funds to benefit a chosen community oriented charity. Meals on Wheels was the beneficiary for the inaugural event and for 2011, the RBYC has chosen the Bermuda Diabetes Association.

This event gives all Bermuda’s sailors a chance to have fun while supporting a very worthy cause. Funds for the Bermuda Diabetes Association will be raised through sponsorship, selling raffle tickets on the day of the event and entry fees.

“Educating the public and assisting patients with this disease is paramount,” stated Wayne Caines, Digicel Bermuda CEO. “Digicel recognizes how important a role the Bermuda Diabetes Association plays in our community as they are building strong links with the public.”

“Diabetes is a disease that has affected so many lives. At Digicel, we recognize the challenges that the Bermuda Diabetes Association faces in today’s economy. Therefore, we are glad to come on board to aid in any way we can.”

Digicel Sales Director, Shane McDonnell, stated, “Digicel is pleased to work with the RBYC for the second year in a row to raise funds for another notable charity. The organizers and sponsors have been working diligently to put together exciting prize packages to provide an engaging experience for all those who enter.”

“The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is excited to be the host club for the 2nd Annual Digicel Cabbage Patch Charity Keelboat Regatta”, said Rear Commodore of Sailing, Somers Kempe. “This unique event allows Bermuda’s sailing community to raise funds for a great island charity, the Bermuda Diabetes Association, while getting together for a fun day of racing.”

“When the concept of the Cabbage Patch Regatta formed, we were very pleased that Digicel wanted to partner with the sailing community in support of this great fundraising event,” according to Jon Corless, regatta organiser. “There aren’t too many places in the world where you can go spend an October Sunday out on the water with family and friends while supporting a community charity. We’re hoping this year’s event will be even bigger than last year’s inaugural race.”

The 2nd Annual Digicel Cabbage Patch Charity Keelboat Regatta will take place on October 23 and the RBYC are hoping to exceed the $9000 raised last year. The RBYC expects up to 50 boats to participate in making this event a huge success that will eclipse the 2010 event. All boats with a PHRF rating are welcome. The first race will be in the Great Sound and the second race will be around the Great Sound and back to the RBYC for the festivities and further fundraising initiatives.
