Digicel Squash Championships Set For March

February 5, 2015

The Bermuda Squash Racquets Association has revealed that the Digicel Bermuda National Squash Championships will take place March 15 through 20, 2015 at the BSRA Squash Club in Devonshire.

Defending Champions Micah Franklin and Runa Reta have already confirmed their entries for the event.

Mr. Franklin, the UK-based current World #180, said, “I’m absolutely coming back to defend my title. It’s always the best event. I’m looking forward to some big matches in front of big home crowds again and hopefully I can come out on top for this year.”

BSRA Director of Squash, Patrick Foster, said, “Every year this event seems to draw all the players together for a fantastic week. We are thrilled to have Digicel’s continued support.

“Very excited to see the strength in depth in the Ladies and age group events and from a personal point of view, I’m happy to see Micah Franklin defending the title he wrestled from me last year. I’m fit, ready to challenge again and looking to see if I can win the trophy back.”

A spokesperson said, “Although Foster has singled out a repeat 2014 final with Franklin as a possibility it may not be that easy as Courthouse Pro and former World top 100 player Kristen Johnson will be in the mix.

“Johnson has recent wins against Foster and Bermuda Legend Nick Kyme in recent months which will see him well placed to challenge for the title. A strong draw also could see top players Noah Browne and Robert Maycock fly in from the US to compete. Both are highly gifted and more than capable of causing some upsets.

“Other names to watch out for in what will be a large field are Kristian Muldoon, John Fletcher, Chris Dawson and National Junior Champion Nazhir Smith.

“On the ladies draw, Runa Reta as two time champion and former World #29 will be extremely hard to beat. She will face talented opposition in the form of Laura Robinson, Susie Lacey and possibly sisters Rachel and Kelly Barnes returning from abroad to take part.

“Overall, the titles will all be hotly contested and make for some great viewing for Bermuda squash fans.”
