Phillips Leads Victory In Slovakian Debut
Bermudian professional basketball player Sullivan Phillips made his debut with the BC Prievidza of the Slovakia National Basketball League, leading them to victory in their opening game of season yesterday [Oct.1].
He was the top scorer for the team with 21 points, which helped propel Prievidza to a 71 – 68 win over Handlova in front of 1,200 fans.
The 6ft 6″ basketballer went three for four from the field, while going four for five from behind the three point line. He went three for six from the free throw line, grabbed 9 rebounds, and had four steals
Handlova held a 18 – 16 lead at the end of the first quarter, however Preievidza held a 35 – 34 lead at the half. Preievidza outscored Handlova 17 – 16 in the third quarter to lead 52 – 50 after three quarters, and then scored 19 points in the final period and allowed Handlova to score 18.
One of the top basketball players the island has ever produced, Mr Phillips received the Golden Ball Award [pictured] at the recently 2011 Island Games – which saw Bermuda win the Gold in the men’s basketball. He also led the Bermuda Men’s National team during the Caribbean Basketball Championships leading in points, assist and rebounds.
Mr Phillips has played in England, Hungary, Czech Republic and Cyprus and has been twice been named as defensive player of the year in both Hungary and Cyprus. He signed with the Slovakian team earlier this month.
