Power Outage After Bus Strikes Pole

November 24, 2011

[Updated] Traffic is presently being diverted in the North Shore Road area due to an accident which saw a bus smash into a utility pole this afternoon [Nov.24], resulting in over 500 households losing power.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 3:30pm Thursday, November 24th police responded to a report of a single vehicle damage only collision in the North Shore Road, Devonshire area where a bus collided with a utility pole.

—-

“Traffic is being diverted at the junction of North Shore Road and Barkers Hill, Devonshire as well as the junction of North Shore Road and Store Hill, Smith’s parish as a result. Inquiries into this incident are underway.”

Update 5.09pm: The Police have said there were no injuries reported.

Update 6.27pm: The road still blocked, and they are presently removing the bus. Unofficial indications suggest that the bus was being driven by a mechanic, and that the bus was not carrying passengers at the time. That is unofficial information, we expect an official police statement later this evening.

Update 6.41pm: The bus has been taken away. Some area residents have lost power, and BELCO staff are moving into place to fix the damaged electrical pole.

Update 7.20pm: BELCO said, “Approximately 78 customers are without power, 547 were without power when the accident occurred; BELCO Operations Centre has been able to back-feed the majority of customers to supply power.

“The pole has to be completely replaced and lines have to be reconnected on the new pole. Due to the scope of the work, full restoration will likely take until morning. BELCO crews are working to make the repairs.”

Update 8.47pm: Video of bus being removed by a tow truck – a rather bumpy procedure.

Update 12.00am: BELCO said the circuit is back on and all customers should have power restored as of 10.36pm.

A Police spokesperson said, “Around 3:30pm Thursday, November 24th police responded to a report of a single vehicle damage only collision on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Cable Hill involving a bus and a utility pole. There were no reported injuries.

“Traffic was diverted at the junction of North Shore Road and Barkers Hill, Devonshire as well as the junction of North Shore Road and Store Hill, Smith’s parish as a result. That section of road was subsequently re-opened. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.”

  1. MinorMatters says:

I know for a fact that the Bus Driver did nothing wrong. I wasn’t there and neither was Mr. Chris Furbert and we both did not see that bus move…to the other side of the street.

    Glad no one was hurt.

    • Yup says:

Looks like that driver either fell to sleep, had a stroke (God forbid). The accident report should be interesting.

    • Common sense says:

OK let me see if i understand what your trying to say, from my understanding you claim you weren’t there, you didn’t see it happen and yet through some grace of god you claim to be enlightened and know the driver was not at fault?

      • Phil says:

I do believe what we’re experiencing here is… sarcasm. Sheesh.

      • Puzzled says:

Just further reinforcement that “Common Sense really isn’t that Common”
Stop thinking you have to pointlessly comment on everything post and always either completely miss the boat or have no clue as to what you are referring to…

  2. Family Man says:

Better make him/her take a urine test TODAY!

  3. K.T.B. says:

So….. will there be a drug/alcohol test this time?

  4. I guess says:

I thought DPT was a drug free work place….. Hummmmm check his urin quick before they go on strike.

  5. SUPERDAVE says:

    She’s Baaaaaaaaaackkkkkkkkkk………..

    • LOL (original) says:

Acctually she won’t be back for at least three to four days……………….

      LOL

  6. bad man says:

I hope the drive and any passengers were okay.

  7. Shark Hash says:

In the video, someone in the background said that “the column locked up on her”

If our buses are not being kept up to safety standards the risk of more accidents such as this increases.

I’m beginning to wonder if our buses are even safe to be on.

    • Same S*** Different Day says:

So IF the colunm locked up on them how long does it take to realize it’s time for me to press the break pedal. Come on now i have seen this happen before and the guy only went about 5 feet further not all the way across the street. If you have a liscence to drive these big trucks and buses then you should be able to think emergency safety quickly.

  8. Don't Trust Public Trans says:

And this why I always use my transportation and not use the bus or taxi…their always a taxi or bus getting in accidents..And they are suppose to be the safest transportation. Yeah right….I Never TTrust the public transportation.

    • Don't Trust Public Trans says:

And on top it had to be going fast to knock out the belco pole…

  9. sharky says:

I’m sure that bus crossed over and smashed that pole trying to avoid a huge fuzzy pink elephant that was sitting in it’s path.I hear the driver left the scene to get a large bag of Doritos.

  10. confused says:

ok so the stearing locked up….was the brakes locked up too? They drive like madmen/women…slow down busdrivers.

    • drunkenUrsula says:

I feel ya… drivers always speeding….one driver goes like a bat outta hell she needs to go back in training …and she very rude!

      • Common sense says:

There needs to be some accountability, they speed over speed bumps, slam on the brakes and then their back to flooring it. This is why the buses are falling apart, they are being mistreated and abused.

        • PEPPER says:

I agree with you…I would rather walk to my destination..than get on a bus

  11. Must b losing my mind says:

Stop with the stupid comments already. Instead why don’t we pray that the driver and passengers are all ok. Save the comments after they investigate what went wrong. Typical Bermudians already condemning the driver before we know how the accident happened.

    • Hello says:

You posted at 6:20, yet the story list at 5:09 police have said there were no injuries reported. You missed the pray fest.

  12. Tickled Pink (and Blue) says:

    Another bus bites the dust.

Look on the bright side, it’s a bus teeming with spare parts to get the umpteen which are shot, back on the road.

Always looking for a positive. Lol !!!

    Bring back the railway

    • Jo Public says:

Problem is now that they have spare parts…they are less on mechanic. LOL.

  13. Honestly says:

Must b losing my mind: I was thinking the same thing…quick to judge instead of praying or thinking of possibilities!

  14. empora says:

people here are becoming very coldhearted for some reason.

    • Hello says:

PLP has made us all angry and bitter. See the PLP achieved something!

    • PEPPER says:

The reason we are cold hearted is because of the BS from our so called leaders !! think about it, Doc Brown screwed us…and now we have Paula Cox who is doing the same thing……and the sheep will follow the leader !!!!!!!!!

  15. Second says:

Hope that everyone was okay!! Accidents will happen but every process must be in place to ensure a driver’s “back is always covered” and that there is no need for the state of his/her mind to be questioned. Let’s not wait until the horse is out of the stable to ensure proper procedures are in place and being followed by all. Sure hope all is okay!

  16. sharky says:

Read people, there were no injuries. These drivers for the most part are cold and rude. They get the respect they deserve and earn.

  17. Get Real says:

I heard the police and bus drivers have a competition going on! Check his/her cell phone records. There must have been a major distraction to accomplish this feat.

    • Common sense says:

LOL. So true. Bus drivers should not be allowed to have their phones on while they are driving. There should be increase fines for such an offence as they are not only risking there lives, the lives of the passengers as well as pedestrian. There should be a speed governor installed on every bus that prevents them from going over a set speed.

  18. Some Mothers Have Them says:

    Ok. bus hit a pole…single vehicle. fine….at 3.30 pm. fine…..

TRAFFIC DELAYS AND HEADACHES STILL AT 6PM ONWARDS……..Outrageous!

Why is traffic stop and go on all three main roads going east..WHAT DE HELL

    • Common sense says:

You have to take into account that all the officials attending the scene are running on island time. You are hard pressed to find anything running efficiently in bermuda anymore

  19. Worried about the children says:

PTB should really consider doing random drug testing, if for no other reason than to keep our children safe.

  20. bemused says:

you should not presume anything until all the facts are revealed to us….having said that, when are all the facts EVER revealed….sorry – what was that?…I hear a voice saying ‘we had to lie to you’….

    • Common sense says:

So true, what ever happened to that PATI law that we were promised three premier’s ago. PLP live you to your word. 1998 you preached about transparency and public scrutiny yet it only seems to come up when your trying to get votes. Less talk, More action.

  21. Triangle Drifter says:

Drug test? Cellphone records check? Bus steering & brake check? A collision, rather than a crash into something implies that the other object was moving too. Better check to see if the utility pole has a license & if it was not distracted by all the information its phone lines were carrying at the time.

  22. getalife says:

@must be loosing my mind you should have caps locked your comment my people just really irritate me i strongly agree with your comment!!!!!!

    • FancyFull says:

      @getalife
why don’t you do just that? busdrivalova or buslovadriva?

  23. drunkenUrsula says:

I must say,I thought that nasty bus driver(female) was driving, cause all she does is speed….so down silly girl..see what can happen?!

  24. peoples says:

no one was on the bus it was a mechanic driving the bus

  25. THE HELL!! says:

Another reason why the private school elite don’t allow their children to use the bus..

    • bermyshotta says:

Haha – ya a dummy bra!

    • Mister Vain says:

      The Private School elite.

    • Nil points says:

What like the PLP ministers? I think with the traffic, crime, dodgy druggies, wierdos, fighting and gangs, any parent who can, drives their child to the doorstep of the school, whether it be by bike, by walking with them, by car or by travelling with them on the bus.

    • Hummmmmmmmm? says:

      U mean white elite?

    • Rick Rock says:

Like the PLP ministers who drop their children to school?

  26. Down 'n' Dirty says:

Imagine waking up to that …

  27. Common sense says:

Yeah it’s fine, if you get caught just call Chris Furbert he’s got your back even if the cost is holding Bermuda for ransom, you’ll keep your job.

  28. OMGbermuda says:

If management knows someone has a “problem” and they allow them to still operate the bus, who’s at fault? “Shared responsibility”…look it up! This is serious, someone could have been killed if they where on the other side of the road (you or me)

  29. 1minute says:

If the wires were underground, no one would of lost their lights…

  30. Down 'n' Dirty says:

Lights out for that dude ..

  31. Michael Dunkley...the milkman says:

Very interesting comments by all…I hope the driver is doing well and recovering from a frightening experience.
This accident does raise a number of questions that must be answered to ensure the safety of all people who use the public transportation system. I hope the management of PTB provide these answers quickly as the public deserve to know especially in light of the many recent stories about the lack of parts to keep buses on the road and drivers not wanting to take randon drug tests or tests after accidents.

  32. Previous State Farm Customer says:

    I MISS YOU!

  33. smith says:

and the bus was put into service in 2010 (license is 2K108), surely it should not have mechanical issues already.

    • bermydrive says:

actually that means its from 2001 and was bus number 08.

  34. The One (Original) says:

Lucky the pole was there or the bus could’ve gone overboard. Be thankful.

  35. Joe says:

    it was a women inna?

  36. Y-Gurl says:

What did the drivers text message say?

  37. Y-Gurl says:

Thats worse driving than usually seen from the PTB I hope the appropriate testing gets done this time!
