Man Charged: Counterfeit Money
In Magistrates Court this morning [Nov.21], facing a number of charges, 25-year-old Ronico Richardson came away with a total fine of $2,350 from multiple charges; a March 2012 trial date for three charges; and the DPP withdrawing two charges.
The charges covered a date spectrum from 8th October 2010 to 18th November 2011.
Initially Mr Richardson pleaded not guilty to two charges involving passing counterfeit $50 bills. He pleaded guilty to two other charges of passing $50 counterfeit money at Cafe Cairo and at the Beach and of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Mr Richardson was allowed by Magistrate Tokunbo, to withdraw his guilty plea and enter a plea of not guilty. These offences were alleged to have occurred on 18th November 2011. The DPP withdrew the two charges to which Mr Richardson had pleaded not guilty.
Mr Richardson pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing cannabis. He was fined $500 for possession on 8th October 2010. A second drugs possession charge stemmed from a road and foot chase on 2nd April 2011.
The Court was told that Police sought to stop Mr Richardson on 2nd April but that he rode off on his motorcycle, leading Police in a wild chase through city streets. Evidence was that he ran five traffic lights and two Stop signs before he ditched the bike and ran off on foot with Police in hot foot pursuit.
Police lost sight of him but knew that he was still in a certain area. Pursuit police called for Police K-9 assistance. The Police dogs found Richardson, and on being searched, Mr Richardson had a plastic bag still in his possession. This bag contained cannabis, and for this possession offence he was fined $500.
The road chase led to three traffic offences. Failing to stop for a Police officer, driving without due care, and not having proper insurance. He pleaded guilty and was fined a total $1,350 for these three charges.
Mr Richardson, who said he was a self-employed electrician who was not currently working, was given until 21 December to pay the traffic fines, was required to pay the drugs fine today or remain in custody, and was granted bail of $5,000 with one Surety to re-appear on 1st March 2012 to face the three outstanding charges.
