Man Charged With Attempted Arson

November 5, 2011

Facing Magistrate Khomisi Tokunbo yesterday [Nov.4], 46-year-old Carlos Astwood was charged with one count of attempted arson of a building that had a person inside; and of causing damage to the building. Mr Astwood pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The DPP’s prosecutor indicated to the Court that the charges stemmed from an incident on 28th October 2011 at the Buzz Restaurant on Pitt’s Bay Road.

The DPP’s request to have him remanded into custody whilst awaiting his trial date of 13th January 2010, did not succeed. Instead, Magistrate Tokunbo granted Astwood bail of $10,000 with one like Surety.

However, Mr Astwood was also found to have $1,250 of unpaid fines dating back to March of this year. Required to pay forthwith, Mr Astwood said that he could not but would need time to pay. Hearing this Magistrate Tokunbo ordered Mr Astwood to serve 90 days in prison in default of payment.
