Upcoming: Chewstick Annual Fall Retreat

November 16, 2011

The Chewstick Foundation will be conducting its annual Fall Retreat weekend from Friday, November 25th until Sunday, November 27th, 2011, for the first time on picturesque Port’s Island.

Retreats feature participant-led workshops, collaborations, group activities and quiet time dedicated to enhancing the overall process of personal growth.

A Chewsstick spokesperson said, “People can get distracted by the everyday demands of living and do not always make time to reflect or to express themselves creatively. The Fall Retreat provides an opportunity to do just that, as well as foster camaraderie in a safe space, literally off the main island of Bermuda.”

“The Chewstick Foundation encourages participants to unplug from their cell phones and the worries of daily living and experience a totally creative weekend, disconnected from the regular stresses of their lives. The experience includes a “bredren” system, which partners participants up to create a personal bond and encourage collaboration.

“Space is limited for this special event and the staff and volunteers at Chewstick are inviting members of the community to be one of roughly 40 participants on this tremendous, life-changing personal adventure.

“Participants depart from Albuoy’s Point (Hamilton) on Friday evening at 6pm for Ports Island and are returned to the mainland on Sunday evening at 7pm.

“There will be 6 Break-Out segments offered each offering up to 3 unique Break-out Sessions to choose from. Break-out Sessions are a mix of creative people collaborating and sharing what they’ve done. The creative breakout sessions are led by passionate people that want to share their fields of expertise and personal experience.

“All attendees are invited to submit a Break-out Session option for consideration, while everyone who attends is expected to bring a passion for learning and sharing. Some of the Break-out Sessions scheduled for the Fall Retreat include: Poetry Performance – Stephan Johnstone, Introduction to Guitar – Gavin Djata Smith, Health & Fitness – Jenille Smith, Voice Lessons – Joy T. Barnum and many more.

“The Retreat is also a lot of fun; attendees have the option to participate in a slew of fun activities like: Hiking/Exploring, Swimming, Bocce Tournament, Football, Yoga, Canoeing, Fishing (provide your own equipment, Fireside Sing-alongs and more!

“Ports Island is a 20 acre island with several useful buildings set amidst a blend of wooded area, open fields, rolling hills, trails, boat docks and more – all ready for you to engage and explore! So bring comfy shoes, practical clothes, a positive attitude and get in where you can!

“Ports Island is feature rich with fully equipped facilities including; dorms, (single-sized bunk beds – you’ll need to bring your own bedding), clean and modern bathroom facilities with personal showers and even wireless internet!

“There is also an industrial-style kitchen and comprehensive dining area to make every meal not only healthy but practical. Dinner is provided on Friday, while breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided on Saturday and Sunday. Participants are welcome to bring their own water and snacks to supplement the Pure Water and meals that are included in the package.

“In the past we have had a lot of interest from parents wishing to bring their kids, as well as youngsters interested in attending. We are proud to finally be able to offer the opportunity for young people ages 6-17 to be able to attend and participate.

“The youngest will be taken care of by a child care provider away from the different workshops that would be going on, while those willing and able to participate in deepening activities will be allowed to. Those under 18 will be required to get parental consent as well as an over 18 chaperone.

“If a chaperone cannot be identified we would be willing to ask other mature attendees if one would be able to be a personal chaperone for you. Please inquire well in advance if you will be bringing a child or if you need a chaperone.

“We have tried to subsidize The Fall Retreat to make it as accessible as possible. Because of this, participants are expected to help out wherever they can, whether it’s by moving equipment, helping prepare meals or general tidy up. This will not be strenuous work and will help foster the bond with other Retreat participants.

“The Fall Retreat charge includes transport to/from Ports Island, all meals stated above, housing, workshops, Break-Out Sessions, necessary supplies, acoustic fireside, open-mic jam session and plenty of vibes!
