Corporate Games: $2.5M Into Economy
The upcoming Corporate Games being held on the island could inject as much as $2.5 million in Bermuda’s economy, Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert said this afternoon [Dec.15].
Minister Furbert, along with Minister of Youth, Families and Sports Glenn Blakeney, spoke at a press conference today on the Corporate Games.
“The Bermuda Corporate Games is a four-day multi-sporting festival for businesses and interested members of the community,” he said. “It will take place from October 25 – 28, 2012.
“This is event is being billed as the quintessential event that will attract local and international business participants, inviting them to engage in several days of fun, team building sporting activities.
The annual event is expected to draw hundreds of competitors and supporters to the island from some of the world’s leading companies.
Mr. Furbert said the event — described as a cross between athletics, networking and tourism — would provide Bermuda with an opportunity to foster relationships with high-net worth corporate entities both on-island and around the world which support their staff members who participate in the Corporate Games.

Ladies and gentlemen, in short, the Bermuda Corporate Games is a 4-day multi-sporting festival for businesses and interested members of the community. It will take place from October 25 – 28, 2012.
This is event is being billed as the quintessential event that will attract local and international business participants, inviting them to engage in several days of fun, team building sporting activities.
We understand that through the marketing and promotion of this event, Bermuda’s economy stands to see an injection of some $2.5 million dollars, during a time of year when our tourism season tends to scale off.
This is very good news for our retailers, our restaurants and our hoteliers who we expect will reap the benefits of what this event will bring to our Island.
So we are thrilled and excited about the exposure Bermuda will receive from this event and as such, I am pleased to endorse and support the 2012 Bermuda Corporate Games.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is an innovative and unique event that has the feel good potential of engaging all spheres of our community.
And during a time when we need to step up to the plate in introducing new ways of doing business to stimulate our business and tourism product, I couldn’t think of a better initiative that achieves this goal.
I understand that the ground work and preparation for this event is already underway, and we in the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism will certainly do our part to ensure that this event is an unqualified success.
With that, I’d like to turn it over to Minister Blakeney who will speak more on the sporting aspects of the Bermuda Corporate Games.

Minister Blakeney’s full statement follows below:
Good Afternoon,
I am very pleased to join my colleague, the Hon. Wayne Furbert J.P., M.P. the Minister of Business Development and Tourism, in announcing that Bermuda will host the inaugural Corporate Games October 25 -28 next year.
As this event promises to be one of the largest corporate driven community events to come to the Island, it is a great opportunity to showcase Bermuda and our fine sports facilities.
I fully support any initiatives that serve to put Bermuda on the map, particularly as Bermuda will be hosting the Carifta Games in April 2012. The Bermuda Corporate Games will only add to our island’s efforts to be recognized as a world class sporting venue with excellent infrastructure and uniquely welcoming amenities.
The Games will be hosted at a selection of the best venues Bermuda has to offer and the Island will welcome thousands of competitors vying to participate in this prestigious event.
The participants may be regarded as “weekend sports warriors” – every day athletes who get fit for business and life through participation in sport but to be successful in the Games or in the business world, organizations need healthy competition and great team work!.
There will be a variety of sporting events in support of the sporting bodies of Bermuda and there will be no restriction on age or qualifying standards but the athletes will compete for medals and corporate awards. Also local sports clubs and the community will be eligible to enter and teams may include employees, colleagues, family and friends.
This multi-sport festival is sure to offer participants an opportunity to put on display the very same characteristics needed to thrive in the business world – focus, dedication commitment and a desire to be the best you can be despite the odds.
It is my hope that events such as the Corporate Games will be a glowing success and with the partnership of the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism, Bermuda’s world class sporting facilities will host many of the best athletes in the corporate world.
Thank you.

why is Furbert taking credit for something which is an entirely private enterprise? did someone say election?
Another photo op for Wayne. Looks like he is making a run for leader of the PLP. He may not be the fastest dog on the racetrack but IMO he is the fastest one in the PLP pack.
Bermuda, don’t blow this oportunity to get some reputation back in the eyes of IB. Best behavior please. No thefts from these people. No murders during their stay. Give them the best of service from airport all the way back to to the airport.
