2021 Bermuda Championship Local Qualifier

The 2021 Bermuda Championship Local Qualifier will be played on October 12th and 13th at the Port Royal Golf Course, with four Bermudian golfers to be offered qualifying spots to compete in the island’s third PGA TOUR event.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Golf Association [BGA], Bermuda Professional Golfers’ Association [BPGA], and tournament officials are pleased to announce the Local Qualifier for this year’s Bermuda Championship will be played Tuesday, October 12 and Wednesday, October 13 at Port Royal Golf Course.

“Four Bermudian golfers will be offered qualifying spots to compete in the island’s third PGA TOUR event, October 25 to October 31, also at Port Royal. The 36-hole individual stroke-play event is open to local Bermudian professional and amateur players.”

BGA President Craig Brown said, “We are ecstatic that once again the BGA and BPGA have secured the right to host a local qualifier that will enable four golfers in Bermuda to fulfill their dreams and participate in a PGA TOUR event.”

The spokesperson said, “During the 2020 Qualifier at Port Royal Golf Course, Camiko Smith’s commanding play earned him the top stop, winning by 5 strokes at 1-under par 141. With a number of players in close contention until the final hole, Michael Sims and Anthony Phipps claimed their spot in the field in the 2020 Bermuda Championship by tying for second at 4-over 146.

“For the second year in a row Michael Sims claimed the low Bermudian medal at the Bermuda Championship.”

BPGA President Scott Roy said, “The Bermuda PGA is again extremely excited for this opportunity to play with the best in the world. This qualifier has certainly produced the best Bermuda has to offer and I feel all players have represented themselves and our community well.

“To feel the energy the locals, have in supporting our Bermudian talent is electrifying and we look forward to the same support and excitement. The Bermuda Championship over three years has gotten better and better and we are proud to be a part of this event and assist the Championship to continue on that trend.”

The spokesperson said, “Entries are open to professional golfers, amateur golfers, and applicants for reinstatement. To be eligible to compete in the Local Qualifier, participants must meet the following criteria:

  • 1. Players must possess Bermudian status
  • 2. Players must be in good standing with the BGA and BPGA and not subject to any disciplinary process or sanction of either association
  • 3. Amateurs must have an up-to-date Handicap Index, or equivalent handicap issued by an international body of golf, not exceeding 1.4 under the USGA Handicap System

“Note: A player’s current eight counting handicap scores cannot include scores from before October 1, 2020.

“Full details of eligibility requirements, accommodation, and Conditions of Competition related to conducting the tournament under Covid-19 requirements will be available at the time of registration. Entries officially open Tuesday, September 7.

“The tournament committee recognizes the current economic impact and has reduced the Qualifier’s entry fee to $125 for all competitors. Any questions should be directed to info@bermudagolf.org or call the Bermuda Golf Association office at 441/295-9972.

“Important note: Bermudians who are located overseas and intend to return for the Bermuda Championship Qualifier should be aware they will be need to fully comply with Covid-19 travel requirements as stipulated by the Bermuda Government, and should factor this, including any time potentially required for quarantine, into their travel arrangements.
