Video: Bermuda Spring Break Ad

December 16, 2011

[Updated] In a bid to revive Bermuda’s highly successful College Weeks of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, the Tourism Ministry is launching a new initiative to attract North American students here during their spring vacations.

The College Weeks reboot was announced in the Throne Speech and the Tourism Ministry is encouraging students to “let loose and party in paradise this Spring Break”, with a new on-line commercial promoting the island was released today [Dec.16].

The Coco Reef Hotel on South Shore is offering $79.99 per night packages to college students in February and March, promising beach parties, cruises and other activities.

I really like the video but there is a problem when you try to log onto http://www.gotobermuda.com as advertised in the last frame.
Hopefully this will be fixed ASAP!?

    • smh says:

I didn’t have a problem, are you sure it’s not just your internet/computer?

  2. The Fact says:

Nice video … to bad most of the scenes take place in the Summer and during non-mariners in August … the last time i checked, the water is way too cold in Feb and March … but that doesnt matter if your having fun …

Instead of false advertising our beaches as party destinations during those months, we need to get a better night life going if we want to attract spring breakers …

    Just keeping it real …

    • Tommy Chong says:

Its not false advertising. The reason these scenes take place is because there are events like the ones in the footage in Bermy. If these events we’re at spring break time then the scene would be the same. Would you rather they casted actors to do a scene that hasn’t happened since the 70′s? Do you think that would be keeping it real?

Also why is there always talk of water being too cold in February? The water is as cold in Florida & Ibiza at this time of year but this doesn’t stop Spring breakers going to these places. The water is actually warmer now in winter since global warming then in the 70′s so if students came back then for spring break then why not now.

I agree about the part of nightclubs being lame here but take a look at spring break videos on you tube & you’ll see that more than half of the party’s are outdoor & under outdoor canopies. Spring breakers come to destinations for events not clubs & if events are organized then it should be fun for students.

      • Let's Be Real says:

Tommy Chong the event in the footage is Beachfest and Non Mariners….you cannot recreate these in the Spring. I hope BPS is ready for some bored spring breakers or Tourism has some LIVE entertainment that they will pull out of their hat just in time.

      • solution man says:

The events in the video are beachfest like stated and the boat party was just a random weekend in the summer, this CANNOT be recreated in the spring. Besides most young Bermudians kids go to UK or Canada who dont have the same spring break as the US

      • got my ticket says:

actually it wasnt random boat party, it was falling off the rock cruise while filming their video.

        • solution man says:

yes.. but the weekend wasn’t a holiday or anything.. i was on the cruise

          • got my ticket says:

lol so was i. what you just said was exactly the point i was making. thanks!

          • got my ticket says:

nevermind..i reread… kinda caught in between the ” big holiday party” and “just some random event”.

    • Just Saying says:

Definitely kept it real, somehow we come half ass at least half of the time. My spring break trip gets scouted in September, beg my parents for the deposit on thanksgiving break, and by time I go back to school in January, I know where i’m going for spring break. A lil too late this go around, planning for 2013 and not so much focus on the beach, and you got a winner.

  3. Dave West says:

What a very misleading video. The students will come here expecting to see the beaches filled with Bikini-clad white girls….only to find the beaches empty and water temperatures at 68F.
    Get real Bermuda Tourism!

    • Open your ears says:

Stop checking the white girls and listen to the words! It says summer time in the video. Dumb A$$.

      • Allen G says:

Now lets be real, everyone knows that the eyes take over when watching that video lol! I didn’t hear summer either.

      • RU serious? says:

Yes it says summer time in the video… in the LYRICS to the SOUNDTRACK!!

So is that how we’re gonna weasel our way out of taking responsibility for misleading these students?? “You should have listened more carefully to the lyrics and you’d have known the footage was from summer”?!

    • Tommy Chong says:

The bikini-clad WHITE GIRLS you mention are the tourist that go to Cancun & Jamaica not the locals so if Bermuda Tourism keeps pushing advertising then the tourist will come. So what if the water is in fact statistically 64F in the winter here instead of 68F WOW!! Big difference!!! At least even though recently we had some crimes on tourist we aren’t like Jamaica & Mexico where on average 8 tourist are raped or murdered yearly during spring break.

Nay Sayers need to go live on some other island to see how we are still more civilized & respectful then other tourist islands in this day & age.

Good Job Bermuda Tourism!!! We have depended too much on IB for the past years & we need to get back to our roots. We didn’t need IB back in the day & we shouldn’t now. Let’s take the tourist from Mexico, Jamaica, Bahamas & other destinations where they need to lock themselves in the hotel grounds because its too dangerous to go out. We can offer them Paradise & Freedom at the same time.

      • pebblebeach says:

I agree good job on the advertisement on the face of it, notwithstanding, but you need to get real….you say we didn’t need IB back then, but I say we certainly need IB now….

  4. Truth (Original) says:

Let us not be unnecessarily negative. It is a step in the right direction. Do remember that our potential visitors check this blog as well.

It doesn’t makse sense scoring an own goal

  5. Why Lie to The Kids? says:

I completely agree. Two words: EPIC FAIL!!!!!! False Marketing will backfire….pull the plug on the video and start over fast. I will be flying my kite and in a rain suit….SMH

  6. Belcario Thomas says:

    Go Bermuda!

  7. Boom Bye Bye says:

When the first college kid that gets busted for ganja that will be the beginning of the end for any college weeks!
They will boycott here quick. This country is way too conservative for college party animals.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Yes Yes!!! This is where we will fall flat on our faces. Bermuda Government we need to establish more lenient laws on cannabis possession. BDA Customs & Police leave the Ganja tourist alone you have gangsters to catch. Why are you wasting your time? This is giving more bad publicity about Bermuda than many of the other crimes going on. Judges, Police & Lawyers in Bermuda you are being accused of extorting tourist because of this & I can’t argue with that because what has been done is defined as extortion. Below is a link to one of many sites mentioning these illegal searches customs has subjected tourist to.

  8. BermyGirl says:

Where are the black people in the video? There are black people who attend college, black people who celebrate spring break, and most importantly there are black people in Bermuda

    • BDA Playa says:

i was wondering the SAME thing, bermygirl. This video should win some type of advritsng award for SPESHIAL EFFECTS for making ALL THE BLACK PPL DISAPPEAR!!! I have to shake my head at this — there are more black ppl in the old “college weeks” videos from the 1960s that BERNEWS have put up this week in the history section!!! What is this FALSE ADERVITISING??? No black ppl at American colleges??? No black ppl live in BERMDUA!!!

  9. solution man says:

The video is false advertising but its better than nothing, and better than any video the government has ever made themselves. All the footage is from shready times+burnt house crew guys (makers of falling off the rocks) and burnt house did the edit on it, i guess contracted by the government.

  10. Brilliant says:

Nice. This was my idea. BUT everything in the video is in July/August…the launch is February/March. Good Luck. Hope ALL the research was made on this one.

  11. Young Bermudian says:

It’s fustrating, yet amusing how people {namely ‘Bermygirl’ and BDA Playa’} pretend to be ignorant of negative stereotypes (and want to recognized for the positive ones) that can be associated with a particular race, lifestyle, grammar ‘choice’, metrosexuality or ‘swag’.
To be to the point: Yes this video misrepresents the ratio of blacks to whites in the community… to call this ‘false advertising’ is so to feign ignorance of the prejudices of our intended audience and indeed many of us. To continue to specifically and directly address ignorance is to waste my time and feed into the unnecessary debate which derives from it; and categorize my opinions, and thus stripping me of my individual opinion
I think this is a great video. I couldn’t help but notice that it showed a predominantly caucasian community of people but I did notice that they were in fact predominantly Bermudians at least, and the editors did manage to throw in a clip or two of some ethnicity lol.
This video captured quite vividly, the fun that Bermuda can be for those that are privileged. There is a big difference in the activities available for the private school communities and public school communities of children in this country, and unfortunately, even a difference in the way they are generally treated, and eventually, how they network as adult professionals. But this doesn’t relate to a one minute advertising commercial! We have domestic issues just like every other country. We can complain about certain civil rights issues, that quite frankly, are way worse in other parts of the world (and unfortunately working class Bermudians will soon actually have alot to complain about). But regardless! We’re trying to sell Bermuda right? Yes we don’t want to sell-out Bermuda, but encapsulating the privileges which are experienced by our richer classes, and marketing this to foreign viewers is hardly criminal, and applaud this effort to show how much fun Bermuda can be for tourists if they are willing to invest some of their hard-earned capital into our economy. It shows that actual locals still experience Bermuda to the fullest! Soon, and sadly, the places that tourists come to may be completely shut off from the local community and self-sufficient!
Great video, I hope it is financially supported to get significant play around the world, because it should surely play around in the minds of foreigners when they think about their perfect beach escape!

    • bermyshotta says:

@ YB – “This video captured quite vividly, the fun that Bermuda can be for those that are privileged.”

aink a priviledge to come down to de events in de video….cuz dey were FREE and open to ANYBODY dat wanted to come down. nice try bra

      • Young Bermudian says:

Let’s keep it real. First of all ya gotta be in certain clicks to hang out with some of these girls without being automatically judged as an outsider… to get invited to ‘their’ exclusive parties. And most importantly, you have to have a boat to join in on some of these regular raft-ups that rival Non-Mariners, which most Bermudians think is the only day of the year where Bermuda really gets poppin on… and Non-Mariners has been poppin for years! The young urban community has only just been catchin on, on a big scale over the past three or five years, and now you actually look around and see a multi-cultured population on the sees that day.

        • tommy chong says:

Exclusive Parties!?!?! LOL!!! Easy now Justin Bieber, as bermyshotta says said in his own T.I. wannabe way, non mariners is free & all you need is a lilo to raft up to some of these girls without being automatically judged as an outsider. The bunch of scallywags I hung out with years ago pitched together cash to get a boston wailer to go to parties like non mariners that are every weekend/all summer long. We used to go Hawkins Island, Paradise Lake & other islands that had parties going on. We knew people with boats big & small that rafted up with ours. No one said anything about CLICKS!?!?! ”encapsulating the privileges which are experienced by our richer classes”!?!?!?!?

There’s many, ”poppin” LMAO parties that go on through the year in Bermy. With many ”poppin” LMAO again & pause to catch a breath, girls who go to them but I’m sure these would be tooooo ”poppin” trying not to LMAO again, for you to handle. Remember, it was the young urban community that invented swagger not the rich. So like Rihanna’s body guard told you Bieber leave it alone. Your condescending remarks are more ignorant & prejudice than the people you are commenting on.

  12. Can't Take It Anymore says:

All you guys above are just to damn critical and unappreciative of anything that goes either left right up down to or fro. WHO CARES when the fotage was takin!!! Its Bermuda is it not?? Thats all that matters!!! Almost seems that any step in a forward direction for Bermuda must get crushed by the masses. All i read above was critical analysis and no solutions. Stop showing your asses to the world guys. Just cause gov’t does it, doesn’t mean you have to as well you know! Cheesh!!

  13. JCS says:

Where are these kids going to stay, on the beach? Unless mummy and daddy are rich I don’t see how they can afford to come here.

    • Rumandcoke says:

JCS….have you not seen the ad recently for Coco Reef that has rooms for
$79 a night with all kinds of activities for “College Weeks”? Who knows… maybe they will need to put 3 or 4 kids in each room!

As one who well remembers participating in those glory days back then,at least let’s give this a try all you doomsayers. And to those brilliant ‘byes’
from the Burnt House film crew, at least you lot are trying and deserve much credit.

  14. reality check says:

it has potential. if we actually have this type of thing all summer not just cupmatch weekend

  15. Brilliant says:

LOL cant take it anymore – You’re the ass. It does make a damn difference the time of year fool. Get a clue. Would you like it if you saw this somewhere else and got there on the off season? and did nothing advertised but paid X amount of dollars to get there. Its a great idea but a lot needs to be taken into consideration when pitchinmg such projects. You’re the critical one

    • BDA Person says:

‘Brilliant’ you self-righteous prick. Do you actually care about these tourists you appear to be defending, or are you simply arguing for the sake of arguing against any idea that is put forth in Bermuda that is not your own- seemingly the Bermudian way… I think the latter… and I bet you vote PLP just to spite the UBP hahahahaha

  16. TonyB says:

The BIGGEST issue is delivering what the great ad is portraying…..

Taking summertime footage of BEACH FEST and Non MARINERS does make for a cool ad though…..

Bermuda must deliver a cool vibe for the kids…..People are right to connect the dots about “KEEPING IT REAL”…..

However…..Let’s see if we can get some kids here…..and if we do….lets have a ball BERMUDA !!!!

  17. outkasted says:

AHHHHHHH WELL DONE!. This is a start. For all you idiots talking about false advertising and that most of these videos were taking during August etc., its true. But it is the first video showing in an advertising campaign showing US as Bermudians first. After many years of advertising I’ve seen by Tourism it’s the first one I’ve seen showcasing US. Now I’m sure that once 2012 Spring Break is successful we can build on the advertising campaign from there for the future simply because we will have the still /video footage. Each and every person needs to do their part. I as a photographer for 11+ years for Bermynet will do mine. The question is as an individual WHAT WILL YOU DO? If you watched the Shreddy Times Videos, the one thing that rings true to my ears was “Trip of a LIFETIME” . The guy that came here had the best time of his life and he had been many places over the world. The REASON…….US. The Bermudian people. WE gave this guy the experience of a lifetime and we did by just being ourselves. ROLL out the RED CARPET of HOSPITALITY and you will forge friendships and relationships with people from around the world. It is what will keep people coming back again and again. Bring YOURSELF. This what Bermuda needs….. BUZZ! You can have all the hotels, etc… But if there is No Buzz people won’t come. Bring OUR LOCAL Talent. BRING OUR Artists. BRING the GOOD VIBES. People will come.

  18. Dave West says:

    C’mon everyone, let’s keep our advertizing real and accurate;

We should mention how Bermuda is legally bigoted towards homosexuals and yet all of the p ussy a$$ gangsters here get all snuggly with each other on their little scooters on a nightly basis.

We should mention about our murder rate problem and tell them to bring a bullet proof vest – just incase! After all the murder rate here is equal to what? Somali???

We should make sure no wheelchair bound guests come here because none of our establishements are handicap friendly – and riding on a bus with your wheelchair….well let’s not even go there.

We don’t have to mention about the white/black hatred thing….because they surely already know like my friends did.

We can tell them that this island of 50,000 Bermudians and 10,000 expats owes somebody $1.3 Billion – and if they wanted to leave a donation to help with that they are more than welcome to.

  19. JT says:

Why would students want to come here in March?

  20. R u jaded says:

@ west…lay off the crack pipe dude! This aint san francisco and they have far more murders in jamaica and mexico yet they both receive millions of tourist evryyear. One wheelchair incident isnt the norm and its part of the reason why the new buses have that hydraulic system that allows the front of the bus to be lowered when it stops. Racism is universal and in no way limited to bda and the only way u dont see it in other countries is for u to bury your head in the sand! And they won’t leave a donation because they can probably use that money to help bail out their own countries debt!

  21. Kraken says:

That video is a simple chop up of another youtube video, one where all the fun was generated by the participants. This will not be replicated for Spring Break in Bermuda unless you plan to have bars on the actual beach, funnels being given out with the umbrellas etc. – oh and also officially encourage college students to jump off fraggle, flat rock etc. which you will not do.

This government can not even make a decision to allow gambling, you think for a second they are going to brave enough to advocate boat races (beer race for those without a clue) and then cliff diving contest on horseshoe, please.

Cool video, not as cool as the original and the follow up with the US dudes but a pipe dream as an official tourism strategy. Lets see the Minister directly endorse this video. prop why it is not available anymore FYI.

  22. Shaking My Head.. says:

Can anyone spell D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-I-O-N ??..$5 Cokes don’t fit in college students’ budgets. Maybe you’ll get better results hosting Freaknik in the back of town.. Gov’t is clueless..

  23. Foolishness says:

wonderful video….but what college student(s) have a few thousand dollars in their pocket to pay for the ever-climbing hotel prices and restaurant prices in our wonderful little island. Oh…and there’s nothing to do here for college students!

  24. Real says:

I swear no matter what situation Bermy is in or what anyone on this island tries to do that is at least semi-productive, all Bermudians want to do is find something negative to say. I’ve never found a more pathetic bunch of people who want to find something bad to say about every little thing (except themselves). It’s no wonder Bermuda is going downhill fast – nobody wants anybody else to make progress…even if it is to better Bermuda in the long run.

    Let’s find some positive points:

    - $79/night college rates – most young Bermudians who would enjoy this campaign are in college or have friends still in college overseas and could easily join in
    - complaints about Bermuda too boring – at least if Spring Break is a success, you’ll have a bit more to do during these months and can stop complaining that the only fun in Bermuda is Beer Pong and lighting up every night.
    - If this event is a success, wouldnt you assume that our beaches would get more people-friendly (ie. bars, more activities, etc.)
    - Bda economy would have X number of new visitors buying Bermuda and therefore could start to pull its way out of this economic downturn.

Now stop being such an embarrassment to our island and start using your brains and being more positive. But if this is what you all want to do, then you all deserve Bda to stay the way it is – nobody would want to be around your kind of people anyways, I know I dont. Stop the negativity and fix this unattractive characteristic 99% of you people have!!

  25. MinorMatters says:

I liked the video…it would have been more representative if the actors were wearing something more akin to what I am wearing today:- a long-sleeved shirt, a jacket, long pants with boots and March 2012 will hardly be any warmer…duh. But all is not lost, college kids will come here if there is organized fun and this is where the intellectual capital pays off and then is when we don’t rely on the sun, sand and beach to provide a happy fun experience in Bermuda.

  26. MinorMatters says:

    “then” = “that”
