BCB Wins TWO ICC Development Awards
The Bermuda Cricket Board has been awarded with two ICC Development Program awards for their work in 2011.
This year the BCB picked up the award for ICC “Best Junior Cricket Initiative” for the BCB National Academy Program and ICC “Volunteer of the Year” for Mr. Lionel Tannock’s long-term service to the cricket in Bermuda. The BCB’s Development program came a close second to new Associate, Suriname.
The ICC award for “Best Junior Cricket Initiative” relates to a new initiative that has given young players the opportunity to play cricket in an organized competition, therefore enhancing the long-term development and viability of cricket within the community or country.
The overall aim of the BCB National Academy is to provide talented young cricket players with a comprehensive program to enable them to develop into outstanding cricketers whilst at the same time providing players with the tools they need to develop into well-rounded members of the community.
The ICC award for Volunteer of the Year Relates to volunteers who have made a significant contribution to cricket development in the previous 12 months. The Bermuda Cricket Board said they were “extremely pleased to be able to nominate Mr. Lionel Tannock who has given eight years of service to the BCB for the betterment of cricket in Bermuda and donates over 1000 hours of volunteer time per year to assist the Board in various different capacities.”
ICC Americas Regional Development Manager, Martin Viera stated, “Bermuda can take comfort in the fact that the quality of their nominations continue to be exceptional.
“Their two awards are a fitting recognition of their tremendous overall effort in Cricket Development in the region. The hard working Lionel Tannock is justly rewarded as “Volunteer of the Year” and their National Academy was recognized as the “Best Junior Cricket Initiative”.
President, Lloyd Fray stated, “Once again the BCB has received international recognition for our programs. The BCB National Academy program serves as the top tier of the BCB Youth Development Pathway providing a strong incentive for Bermuda’s young cricketers to progress to a higher level providing further incentives for children to participate from a very early age.
“We are now starting to see the impact of our programs with many players who started in our youth programs breaking through to the more senior national teams such as Joshua Gilbert, Terryn Fray, Tre Manders, Kamau Leverock, Damali Bell and Christian Burgess.
“These programs would not happen without the support of volunteers like Lionel Tannock and I am extremely pleased to see his dedication to cricket in Bermuda has been recognized by the ICC. Lionel is a huge asset to the BCB and to our staff and this appreciation is well deserved.”
Mr. Fray concluded, “The BCB would not be able to maintain the high standard of our programs without the support of the Bermuda Government and all our individual sponsors including the Argo Foundation who have generously supported workshops and training camps within the National Academy Program for the past two years.
“On behalf of the Board I would like to thank them and the community for their support and look forward to seeing how our Academy continues to develop in 2012.”
