Well done CableVision. Bermuda retailers and government take note: This is how you respond to competition. You adapt to survive instead of whinging and regulating.
CableVision’s model has been set upon by the introduction of Netflix’s (coupled with another technology) on demand movie and television/cable programming. People can now watch what they want when they want it without needing to pre-record or be limited to what is currently on the programme schedule.
CableVision needed to consider its options:
1) Whinge to goverment to put some sort of tax on internet media streaming.
2) Adapt its model to compete with Netflix.
Thank goodness it chose number two. In doing so CableVision has moved the market forward and given the island more choice. Now we will have an option to view the latest movies earlier than Netflix currently makes them available. Some of Avail-TVN’s content will never make it to Netflix, giving us more selection. In addition we get better live sports coverage (higher definition) and access to additional alternative content. CableVision will most likely make use of their high-speed cable network to deliver the service without you having to have a high-speed internet connection.
Competition has increased the quality, accessibility, and content of the product; pricing remains to be seen. This is how a free market operates. Fulfil the needs and wants and you will be rewarded with the business. As market conditions change so must your business if you are to survive.
Retailers, adapt your business or it will die. This duty increase will cause your businesses immeasurable suffering. Surely you must see the harbingers of this outcome already beginning to manifest themselves.
Adapt or die. Anything else stifles progress.
