Murder: Third Man Arrested

January 10, 2012

This afternoon [Jan.10] the police confirmed they have arrested a third man in connection with the murder of 24-year-old Stefan Burgess.

The suspect – a 32 year old man – was arrested on suspicion of murder, and the two men initially arrested in connection with this incident remain in police custody.

“The pace of the investigation is steady, and information continues to come to the attention of investigators who are following up several lines of enquiry,” said a police spokesperson.

The shooting occurred at approximately 9pm on Sunday evening [Jan.8] in the Glebe Road area of Pembroke, and resulted in one man being injured, and claimed the life of Mr Burgess.

Yesterday the police arrested two men in custody in connection with Mr Burgess’ murder; a 25-year-old man on suspicion of murder and a 39-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

Anyone with any information on the murder of Stefan Burgess is asked to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1079, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

I will not be satisfied until I hear GUILTY!!! “suspicion” is not enough for me….

  6. Really?? says:

All this is a ploy used by the police to make it look like they are doing a good job. Anybody they bring in for questioning they put out a statement saying they “arrested” somebody on suspicion. How many of these people they arrest do they actually charge? All they do is bring attention to people who may be innocent of the crime and create a new target for gunmen. We know that the “Street” doesn’t need proof or evidence and usually anybody arrested is labelled as being automatically guilty and becomes a target of retaliation whether they are guilty or not. Why don’t the police just conduct their investigation and bring in the people for questioning instead of announcing everytime they bring some one in. It’s funny that you hear that part but not when they clear the person of any wrongdoing and let they go.

Also it seem’s so strange to me that the next day the BPS have arrested someone for these shootings. Are these guy’s just shooting then saying here i am or are the BPS just grabbing somebody.

      • Happy Valley Resident says:

Nope its because people have spoken up. The community has just as much of a part in stopping the violence by letting it be known that we wont stay silent anymore!!!!

    • PEPPER says:

      Good point.Really …

    • Common Sense says:

Really?? – Are you SERIOUS!! The police have managed to secure dozens of convictions in the last couple of years for gun crimes, ranging from simple possession to murder. They probably have a better crime detection rate for serious crimes that most other democratic countries. And that is despite the witness intimidation and the obvious fear of reprisals against witnesses. I must admit your statement, “Why don’t the police just conduct their investigation and bring the people in for questioning instead of announcing every time they bring someone in” has me flummoxed because that is EXACTLY what they do. Are you suggesting that the Police fully complete their investigation, interview all possible winesses, wait for the final forensic evidence results (a procedure that can take maybe 3 months) and THEN make the arrest. In the meantime the suspect/s might have killed 3, or 4, or 5 or 6 more of our young men.

And you really must live on another planet when you say that you never hear “when they clear the person of any wrongdoing”!!! Perhaps you’re not aware of our justice system. Here in Bermuda ALL trials are held in public and we can read about the evidence on a daily basis in the newspaper and on TV. The whole country knows when someone is found not guilty, or if they are found guilty – and that’s the way it should be.

The Police are doing a tremendous job in the most difficult of circumstances and I, for one, admire them for all they do to try to make us safe.

      • Really?? says:

You must not speak English if you don’t unsderstand what I said. How the heck did you come to your conclusions from what I wrote? Where did I say don’t interview anyone? Do you not realize that everybody the police brings in for questioning is announced all over the media as being arrested for suspicion. And then people like you come all over the blog sites and talk about job well done or hope the get convicted. You do this because in your mind, they are already guilty of the crime. Do you know that many of the people the police “arrest” for the crime are never charged or sent to court but are released from custody for any wrongdoing. by that time, in the streets it doesn’t matter, they have already been judged, covicted and most often have a target put on their heads for reprisals. All, I said was that the police don’t need to announce to everyone that they have someone is custody. Do, we the public need to know about everyone they question? If you say yes to that, then equally, we should be informed when they are released without charge and exonerated of any wrongdoing. That is before any charges or public trial as you put it. I can tell that you live in on that “other side” of Bermuda where violence and murder is just a headlines in the paper or an online story but to many of us it is real as it affects family and friends. So I don’t expect you to understand what i’m talking about as you can’t comprehend it. Try using what your name implies “Common Sense”

  7. Really?? says:

Suppose this third person arrested was home all night and could be proven by several witnesses? What if this person had nothing at all to do with the shooting but the police just had to follow leads and clear him before moving on? Does it make the headline sound a lot less sensational? Shouldn’t the police come out and say this suspect has now been cleared of any wrongdoing? But they won’t and the rumors will continue and possibly put this person in danger of misdirected retaliation.

    • JS Suill says:

So long as the police don’t publicly name a person held on suspicion who is then cleared then what is the problem? I have seen the press report on many occasions that persons have been released without charges. The problem comes when people gossip because they know the person or police/court employees reveal such person’s name. This word on the street is what creates the problem and the people who spread such information should be ashamed. Its bad enough that the criminal element will know anyway because they always have ‘colleagues’ in custody who can report back to their hoodlum hommies.

  8. I agree with u strongly on that Really

  9. tricks are for kids..... says:

So true…can’t agee with you more..the two that were “arrested” and brought in for questioning for the last shooting in Southampton have been released…although their names have not been published people know who they are..just as they know who Police have in custody for this most recent shooting…..Sad if its not them cause I’m sure they are on ‘someone’s list’ just because………….

    • Midnite says:

So by your logic they shouldn’t question people and try to figure out this mess on their own without speaking to anyone? Yup, makes perfect sense.

      • it is what it is says:

@ midnite (only referring to you because your comment is directly under mine. Nobody is saying that they shouldn’t question them (I know that I didn’t say that) but maybe, just maybe they should change the way they go about it..get CONCRETE FACTS before they announce they have someone in custody, words like “suspicion’, “person of interest” just doesn’t cut it…and many of the ongoing spats of violence have been based on the Police “suspicion” of people. So it would MAKE PERFECT SENSE if they actually waited until all their “ducks are in a row”…..

        • Lissa says:

@it is what it is. Isnt it the newspaper that does the reporting…
its six one way and half a dozen the other..you people always complaining…YAWN……….

          • It is what it is says:

Sorry that your tired …..(Yawn). I guess I should respond since you’ve selected my comment….For the record I am NOT complaining my comment was made solely upon observation. Basically all of the comments with the exception of a couple (yours included) are not eluding to the fact that the Police are not doing their job but its how they are going about it..they HAVE picked up people for ‘suspicion’ and maybe they weren’t the ones who committed the crime and they have been placed in danger because of it!!!! THAT’S the point I am trying to make. So it doesn’t matter who does the reporting..be it the Police (which they do quite often OUTSIDE of work) or Joe or Jane Public..the FACT remains that their method of ARRESTING, ANNOUNCING, DETAINING etc. has contributed greatly to the ongoing spats of violence…may not be the cause but it certainly has been a contributing factor …..and I am speaking from FACT!!!

            • JS Trott says:

It should be “alluding to” not “eluding to” but perhaps an interesting Freudian slip.

              • It is what it is says:

Thanks for the correction :) Just one of those things..noticed AFTER I hit “send”…no way to retrieve it once its gone…and I’ve already bothered Pat today to make a correction…..

      • Really?? says:

Where did you see anyone say the police shouldn’t question anyone? Did you not read the posts? Or are you just one of those people who want to create an arguement just for the sake of it. Go back and read the post slowly so that you can understand what it says or ask someone else to explain to you what it means if you have problems comprehending basic sentences.

        • J Zuill says:

This is quite an odd debate. I think we should all acknowledge that regardless of whether the police or the press report it, the fact that someone has been arrested becomes widely known on the island via the citizen rumour mill. It has always been that way and its even more efficient now because of BB, etc. So there’s really nothing the police can do but acknowledge what they are doing so that things not left entirely to rumour. Its unfortunate that the foolish hoodlums among us then use this information to further target people but they are the blame for that, not the police or the press, nor is it the fault of the citizens spreading rumours for that matter. It is entirely the fault of those hoodlums among us who have chosen to live their lives as cancers to themselves and society.

  10. Feel The Love says:

I thought they have to arrest on ‘suspicion’ first. Especially if they have not yet been arrested or interviewed in connection with the above matter.

  11. Bermudian says:

You people really need to get a life. You are seriously debating this issue. Having someone in custody is better then having no one arrested at all.

  12. So what ya saying Bermudain, U don’t care if the innocent or what, as long as police has people in custody,ya wrong 4 that, U need 2 get a life, & stop trying 2 put crime on anyone. That’s serious 2 put on anyone head especially being innocent. They should pick u up, so u can no what it feel like.
