February 27, 2012

Bermudian track and field athletes put on some big performances this past weekend [Feb.25/26] to claim four wins — and set one new record — at U.S. university conference championships held in Boston, Kentucky and Washington.

Arantxa King competed at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships [MPSF] in Washington, winning the long jump with a leap of 6.36m and winning the triple jump with a leap of 12.88m, helping her team become the MPSF indoor champions.

Jasmine Brunson [pictured] competed in the ACC championships in Boston winning the triple jump, setting a new Bermuda record of 13.19m. Her winning performance helped her team become the ACC indoor champions for the third time in a row. She also placed 4th in the long jump with a leap of 6.01m.

“Brunson has had some good practices, she was determined to win that gold medal,” said Clemson Head Coach Lawrence Johnson.

Bermuda national record holder Aaron Evans won the 800m in a time of 1.48.22 at the SEC Championships in Kentucky, while fellow Bermudians Latroya Darrell placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 12.71m, with Alison Outerbridge placing 19th.

In addition, five local athletes competed in the Gibson Relays in Jamaica. The girls relay team competed in the 4x400m and place 4th in their heat [16th overall] and Juma Mouchette placed 10th in the mile, in a personal best time of 4.27.

On the local front, Bermuda had four athletes reach the qualifying Carifta standard competing in special events during the Telford Mile event; Kyle Webb qualified in the U20 boys 200m [21.97], Dage Minors in the U20 boys 1500m [4.10.51], Shuntae Hendrickson in the U20 girls 1500m [5.04.61] Quinine Outerbridge in the U17girls 1500m [5.10.12]
