Somerset Man ‘Fears Coming Town’

February 24, 2012

A 23-year-old man from Sandys parish told the Magistrates that he missed meetings with his Probation Officer because “I feared for my life coming town.”

In Magistrates Court yesterday morning [Feb.23] Travone Saltus pleaded guilty to four vehicle offences that landed him with $2,250 worth of fines.

He was also given the stark alternative of going to jail for 80 days or immediately paying off an unpaid $800 fine that stemmed from a conviction and fine from June 2011, almost eight months ago. Senior Magistrate Archie Warner gave Mr Saltus until 23rd March to pay the new $2,250 fines.

The new fines arose out of a police stop on 23rd February. Patrolling police had seen Saltus on a bike and had signaled him to stop. Saltus did not stop and Police gave chase. During the chase, Saltus ran a stop sign, and disobeyed a No Entry sign. Police finally caught up with him and there was a minor collision between the police chase car and the bike that Saltus was riding.

After he had been stopped, and during initial questioning, Police determined that he had been drinking. Saltus agreed to be breathalyzed, and failed the text. For driving whilst impaired, Saltus was fined $1,000 and disqualified from driving all vehicles for twelve months.

Saltus was also fined $1,000 for having no 3rd party insurance, $150 for having no bike licence, and $100 for having no Drivers licence.

Checking the file on Saltus, the Senior Magistrate saw that Saltus had been placed on Probation on 19th November 2011 and was still on Probation.

He told Saltus that the most recent Probation Officer report indicated that he had not been complying with instructions and had missed meetings with his Probation Officer. Asked why he was not complying, Saltus replied that he: “… couldn’t make it on certain days because I feared for my life coming ‘town’…”

Magistrate Archie Warner told Saltus that he had to stay in touch with his Probation Officer and deal with any problems that he had and meet all conditions that were set. Magistrate Warner reminded Saltus that his Probation Order could be revoked if he failed to comply with conditions that had been set.

@MinorMatthers – What the F$¢k are you talking about! Not everybody who is afraid to go somewhere is afraid to go there because of their lifestyle! Sometimes it’s just living in a certain area can cause people to want to harm you! Other times it may be due to a situation that could have happen in their young days during school and now people whom are involved in “gangs” are seeking revenge. Also that every so called “thug” is not supporting their children…actually most are supporting their children. So who is ignorant now? {answer MinorMatters)

    Get real…

The man is on probation which means he has been CONVICTED of some form of criminal activity. Also he has no problem with simply failing to show up for COURT ORDERED probation meetings.

Even before we get in to this gang nonsesne, the man clearly has some personal house cleaning to do – or not as the case may be.

    • Please says:

Scott…you dont always have to be convicted of anything to land probation. Do your research before running ya chops.

Um, is it not possible for this kid to get a police escort? The police/governor/PLP may need to look at these types of situations and think out side the box.

  12. Mama Bear says:

It is all about turf wars…and clearly we have issues. I don’t blame the guy for not wanting to come to town…that said – I am sure the probation officer would be willing to meet in somerset/westgate…or a transfer of probation officers who work the “area”. It is about the fact that he waited to get to court to tell of his concern. How about calling probation officer with concerns, so they are documented that they at least made contact, and voiced his concerns – before he got to COURT – otherwise it is an excuse, as he did not take the proactive approach for his own BENEFIT. We need to be very AWARE of the situation and facilitate to not allow these excuses to come up. It is true, or are every one of you ok with just cruising anywhere in this tiny country day or night….doubt it!!!
