25 Year Sentence For Attempted Murder

March 14, 2012

22-year-old Anwar Muhammad was sentenced to 25 years in prison today [Mar.14], after being convicted of attempted murder earlier this year.

Mr Muhammad was charged with the shooting of Princeton Burrows in August of 2010 in Sandys parish. Mr Burrows was shot while at the junction of Middle Road in Sandys and Woodlawn Road [outside Maximart] at 3.45pm on August 23, 2010.

A statement issued by the police said, “The Bermuda Police Service would like to acknowledge the sentence meted out by the Supreme Court today, in respect of Anwar Muhammad who was previously convicted of Attempted Murder & Firearms offences.

“The sentence of 25 years (15 years and 10 years respectively, to run consecutively) reflects the serious nature of the gang violence that has been plaguing the Island for the past 3 years.

“Cases involving gang violence in the upper courts are currently experiencing an approximate conviction rate of 75%, which speaks to the quality of the prosecuting team in the office of the DPP, the nature of the evidence presented, the willingness of witnesses to come forward and the investigative ability of our officers generally.”

  11. tricks are for kids says:

Interesting that the gun is still on the street and the VICTIM REFUSED TO CONFIRM that he was seen by a prosecution witness handing the gun to someone else as he was able to wrestle it away from Anwar.

Even though he was the victim I feel that a bit more pressure should have been applied on him to reveal if he did indeed pass it on to someone else….after all it is still out there awaiting its next victim……..

  12. M.O.# says:

Hope u ppl on here kno that only in Bermuda..wher they lock up ppl on some bullsh*t!! All these cases that’s bin happening..will never, ever get a conviction in the states or in england!!.NEVER!! • Aunty says:

He is gone and several others. :-) SMILES

    • smh says:

What shinanigans are you going on about? Are you implying that this case is “bullsh*t”? I don’t call handling a gun “bullsh*t” and if you think that is okay then you need help. And are you trying to say that criminals in United States and England do not get convicted for crimes like such? They found GSR on an item of clothing with his DNA on it. And let’s not talk about the Cinderella shoe found at the scene. Sorry, but your comment just makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. It just seems to me like you have a bias opinion because your M.O.B friends are getting locked up. Well boohoo for them, that’s the consequences of being involved in that life. If you cared so much you would be directing them into a better path which does not involve their lives being wasted. Or maybe you are involved in that life too.

&Stop being scared and come west to see me on this? Excuse me. Why don’t you post your REAL name and address, probably live right down the hill from me!!

    • amen says:

How are people supposed to come west and see you when you are scared to even print your own name? Hypocrite much? You probably don’t even know what that means. You ain’t that tough so stop acting like it. Why don’t you leave west and come see us? Oh you can’t right? You clearly didn’t know the facts of the case. If you miss your soldiers that much go visit them up westgate.

    • United says:

So, commit the crimes in the States if you don’t want to go to jail. They couldn’t get Al Capone on anything Mob related so they busted him on tax evasion. Works in the States.

  13. Rummy says:

Really sad times for Bermuda with attitudes like that.

  14. SexyBlacque says:

    • smh says:

No all these gangsters on my island are a becoming wastes of sperm cause all they are doing is wasting their lives. You think parents want to be visiting their precious children that they gave life to up in prison? That would bring tears to my eyes. This man is young. 25 years in prison? You how much things he could be doing with his life within that time period?

    • that'll learn ya says:

@STFU – you’re doing the same thing we are all doing. IDIOT. Why don’t you go home…pack a bag and leave it outside of Westgates main entrance cause you’ll be there soon too.

    • United says:

      Hey STFU, STFU!

  17. Translator. says:

Bernews can you please TRANSLATE the $@#&* that you allow on this site? I speak English only and do have great difficulty understanding any other language.

  18. M.O.# says:

To SMH!..once a the “victim!!”..”The VICTIM!” Goes on the “STAND” and Says that he wasn’t the person that shot me!.from right ther…the cases should be throw out!!..#watyadumb??..u having GSR on ya clothes don’t mean sh*t..but u came into contact wit somebody!!..(Ya small minded too!)..cuz anybody could have used his shoes and shirt!..(Same way wit the case wit that young bie leo!..wit the arm robbery!!..his DNA was found at the places on a scarf and gloves!!..and the lil ass got off! Cuz he said somebody else stoled them and used them!)..#watyadumb!! You sound like cop/snitch!!…u think um goin post my info, so that u can snitch on me!!..GO LAY DOWN..

    • amen says:

It’s a shame that you were the fastest of your fathers sperm. A ‘father’, do you know what that is? You are so smart maybe you should have defended your mob mate, with that brilliant defense theory he surely would have beat his case. Dummy.

    • smh says:

I sound like a snitch? LMFAO do not make me holla. Are you that paro? I’m only telling you post your stuff because you are asking people to come visit you up west. So how you expect us know where you at? And like I said, the position that Anwar is in is because of his association. And since there is so much evidence showing that it was not him why don’t his friends do something about it? Like what kind of friends are these MOB boys to just let their boy go down for something he did not do, because I am sure many of them know exactly who did it!!! I think MOB should befriend the real shooter if that is the case! I’m just sayin’

  19. Unbelievable says:

Not affilated with any gang but from where I stand this is MY OPINION:
1- Anwar runs a barbershop where he comes into contact with MOB affiliates all day. The GSR could have easily been passed off onto his clothes from the real shooter at the barbershop after the incident. (Photo evidence that he was working at the time of the shooting shown in court)
2- Anwar’s belongings are held in a publicly acessable location (both the storage shed and the barbershop) where anybody could have “borrowed” his clothes.
3- The rider (who was originally the charged person and was later released of ALL charges after pointing the police to ALL of the “findings” of things belonging to Anwar) is the only one linking Anwar to the items used to convict him. Especially after the “Victim” said in open court that Anwar WAS NOT THE PERSON that shot him!!!
My money is on the Rider as being the guilty party.
I know that we are all fed up with the gun violence and crime period in Bermuda, but to look past all of the obvious above just to pass on a conviction for the sake of a conviction is wrong on all counts.
Anwar, I don’t know you from a can of paint, but I do know the “Victim” quite well. Hold your head up young man. Karma does not sleep and all of those responsible for where you are today will be dealt with according to Karma’s wishes!

    • tricks are for kids says:

@ ‘unbelievable’ I am totally with you on this….hence my comment in my previous post. While I do understand that people are tired of all the violence there are at least two recent convictions that come to mind (excluding Anwar’s) that should not be based on the evidence presented in court. EVERYTHING that you have mentioned in your post is ACCURATE!!!! To convict on EMOTION is wrong!!!!! To those that are saying the opposite you probably were not present in court to hear what was actually presented because if you were your mindset would be different. THE VICTIM SAID THAT IT WASN’T ANWAR THAT SHOT HIM!!!!!!!!!!!! I happen to know both parties and I stand by my previous post that the “victim” should have been held accountable as well.

      • Unbelievable says:

Totally agree with your post on at least two cases as well. People need to stop playing with peoples lives and take their position as juror seriously and not be persuaded based on media (because even though they are ordered not to partake of the media frenzy we all know they do) who publish there fantasy version of court events or personal emotions.

Its trully time for jury cases to be a choice rather than mandatory.

    • BallzLaw says:

so true. But Since he has Tattoos the prosecution/jury had him stamped as guilty the minute they saw him. the Judge threw the book at him. they only did this to make an example out of him.

the Law is NOT fair. theres a difference between getting a convictions and EARNING them. Now the BPS is gona post about a 75% conviction rate in gang crimes and expect the public to praise their good service.

      • tricks are for kids says:

This goes to show you that you should “Never Judge a book by its Cover”……….

      • Unbelievable says:

When I was young my friends and I all got tattoos with a certain “name” which we were all called back then. If you are old enough to recall Clayhouse days, all the neighborhoods had their own and most everyone in my age group were called by where they lived. We were and still aren’t violent people.
The “name” we all have tattooed on us has now become known in the area as reckless individuals that tag the area. So by the mindset of the average Bermudian, if anyone was to see my old ass with the same “name” tattoo, that automatically makes me a gang affiliate.
My point is, nobody knows when Anwar got the tattoo. “MOB” has only taken this new level in the last few years. So back whenever he got it, it was probably just some “kids being kids” thing.
At the end of the day, I would love to know WHY they keep taking the word of this Shawn Williams as gospel and not trying him for a damn thing.
(RAA shooting, White Hill shooting to name two specifics etc etc etc)

  20. crazy says:

youhoo ya forgot ya shoe! LOL

  21. Lo. says:

Bermudians are so fxcking ignorant .. Carry on..

  22. Hammer Of Man says:

im not sayn guilty or not. but the courts Bend the rules. Thats how they got a 75% conviction rate. If the victim says it wasnt anwar. It wasnt anwar. if pictures PROVE he was WORKING the time of the shooting. How can u convict him? simple. Make ur own rules.
