Bubba Watson Qualifies For PGA Grand Slam

April 9, 2012

American Bubba Watson is the first to qualify for the 2012 PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda at the Port Royal Golf Course, winning the Masters Sunday in a sudden death playoff versus Louis Oosthuizen.

“It was a thrilling tournament and the famed Green Jacket has gone to a worthy champion,” said David Charles, Senior Director of Championships for the PGA of America. “Bubba Watson is a fan favorite on tour which makes him a perfect fit for the fan-friendly PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda. We’re excited to have him as our first qualifier after an emotional win at the Masters.”

The Grand Slam features the winners of the year’s four major championships – the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, the PGA Championship and the Masters. The other three qualifiers will be decided in June, July and August of this year.

The Grand Slam will be played October 22-24 and broadcast to a worldwide audience on TNT. The 30th PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be hosted by the Bermuda Department of Tourism, Port Royal Golf Club and the Fairmont Southampton.

Ticket-carrying fans are allowed to get closer to the pros at the Grand Slam than at any other competitive golf tournament. Because there is only one group during the two-day event spectators are permitted to follow the players down the fairways of every hole – standing just a few feet from the action in some cases.

Andy Burrows, Grand Slam Chairman, said: “Port Royal is a relatively short course by championship standards so with Bubba Watson’s long drives and phenomenal shot making skills it will make for some awe-inspiring golf and an incredible spectator experience.”

“This is going to be one of the years when getting tickets early will be critical,” said Mr. Burrows.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf features a $1.35 million purse, with the winner receiving $600,000; second place $300,000; third place $250,000 and fourth place $200,000.
