Minister: Four Arrested For Home Invasion

April 5, 2012

[Updated with Bermuda Police Service statement:] Acting Minister of National Security Michael Scott today [Apr. 5] expressed the Government’s concern for the victims of the recent home invasion in Devonshire.

Three men and a woman burst into Rhonda Wilkinson’s house on Monday night.

She said the armed group then proceeded to terrorise the five occupants, including her two young children, and rob the home.

“First and foremost as Acting Minister and on behalf of the Minister of National Security, I wish to offer my profound and sincere empathy to Ms Wilkinson, her her daughter and son, her cousin and to Ms Wilkinson’s boyfriend following their traumatic experience in what should have been the safety of their home,” said Mr. Scott.

The Acting Minister continued: “This senseless crime subjected children to the threat of serious harm and that is a shocking element of this crime. I am advised that already, four individuals have been arrested in connection with this matter and forensic analysis has been fast-tracked to aid in the investigation. Again, excellent police work has yielded results and I look forward to justice being served.

“I would like to reinforce with the community that we must exercise increased vigilance, adopt neighborhood watch mentalities and act as our brother’s keeper. We urge members of the public with any, and I stress any, information regarding this incident or any suspicious behaviour noticed in your neighbourhoods to contact the police directly or the confidential CrimeStoppers hotline.”

[4 p.m.] Police Superintendent Antoine Daniels said in a statement: “Police are continuing their investigations into the aggravated burglary, which occurred around 8.30pm on Monday 2nd April, 2012, at a private residence located on Middle Road in Devonshire Parish. Three men and one woman have been arrested and remain in police custody.

“The scene of the incident has been forensically examined and samples seized for forensic analysis.

“Investigators are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the Middle Road, Devonshire area between 8 – 9pm on Monday night, or have any information whether they believe it to be important or not, to contact police at 295-0011, or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-Tips (8477).”

Superintendent Daniels said the Bermuda Police Service also wanted to thank those persons who have come forward thus far with information and look forward to continuing a positive rapport with community residents.

“As I have stated many times before, the Bermuda Police Service’s capacity to deal with crime depends to a large extent upon its relationship with the community,” he said. “Recently in Bermuda, this belief appears to have been accepted with many positive interactions occurring between police and citizens, resulting in a significant number of high profile firearms offenders being successfully prosecuted before the courts.”

Funny, Minister Mike only wakes up after OBA makes a statement first.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Thats because plp ministers love playing Craig says. Why do they need premier Cox if craig keeps making the decisions they bite off of. They might as well ask Craig to be premier if they keep following his lead. Maybe its because premier Cox hardly has anything to say & her expressions HER EXPRESSIONS! Do they ever change!?!?! I would hate to play poker with our premier cause I’d go bankrupt trying to read her thoughts.

      • Yup says:

PLP ministers also love playing facebook. They harvest it for ideas and will also try to use it to win the next general election.

    • My MY MY says:

Instead of being so negative…..and bring politics into this again with your sad OBA I love everyone in Bermuda besides you people attitude…..why don’t you be happy that the Minister came with facts and positive results…….you are part of the problem……

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

The Minister came with nothing, the police whom may I remind you is controled by the Govenor did all the work the Govenment get no credit sorry………

LOL just saying not taking away from your point about the negativity.

        • Bad News Bear says:

I love how the PLP are quick to take credit for the successes of the BPD but are just as quick to throw the Governor under the bus for their less than stellar performances.

    • What about the People says:

Note, the Minsiter spoke and said 4 peopel were ARRESTED. OBA spoke and did what they always do, a bunch of platitudes that mean nothing.

      • Hmmmm says:

The police did this, not the PLP you dumb dumb

  2. Joonya says:

Mr Minister, before the courts send them on a paid vacation out West on my dollar, please send them all to the stocks in St. Georges and have each one of us come up for a chance in stoning them. It would make a good day’s outing and could potentilly revive the Towne’s economy.

    • observer says:

I feel this is not a bad idea for cabinet to concider. This is not capital punishment, but it is an embarressment for them and also helps us to jeer and boo the individuals that are harming our precious country. And yes it may be a good idea for tourists and locals to visit the old town and generate a little business. I feel it is something to concider.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

$10 per stone or tomato or something like that……………..

        LOL

    • Tolerate says:

Hahaha, Excellent!!!!! I’m not an advocate of public flogging or anything like that, but I was in St. George’s last evening having dinner and thought “How can we breathe life in this Old Town?”
Weird, as I sat under the Stocks; the thought never occurred…… It’s been in front of us all this time…..

      • Joonya says:

Damn right! Sometimes Old School os the best school..

      • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

but NOOOOOOO…we cant do that coz it falls under the most heinous name of COLONIALISM…..OOOOOOOOwww we cant have that type of draconian measures can we now ..?
        bunch of f#@kin a$$wipes….

    • address says:

failing all of the above, which I would definitely support… i think if these people are found guilty (and anyone in the future).. then their home addresses, phone numbers, and place of employment should be publicised

      • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

their pics an names should be plastered on the sides and baks of buses…including wat they were convicted for ….

    • pepper says:

count me in ….the old town needs to use those stocks for real I would pay to see this…

    • Eyes Wide Open says:

Good idea!! But I bet their mommas and nanas would be out there crying “That’s my baby!” Well, what were you doing while your baby was out terrorizing other innocent people and their babies in their own homes? Too many mommas are in denial and blaming others for their children’s sadistic ways. SMH! Sometimes I think they need to get flogged too!

  3. cant believe it says:

this is bull$!@t soon i will be advocating for LAW ABIDING CITIZENS to have a GUN!!! If we as law abiding people have a 45 i can bet you my life that these type of cowards would think twice before going to someboy’s house.
My God just think that could be anyone of you and any one of you can be next..what would you do..how will that affect your children… I am starting to get angry, there is no more room for me to fear these rebels to society, the next thing to happen is action and if the police or government dont do something soon then there will be a group of law abiding citiziens who are fed up and angry that will band together and take out Bermudas trash and leave it for the garbage man to pick up. This is serious and we have families and these crooks have no respect for decent people or their loved ones……ITS TIME TO START FIGHTING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

Yo Brah!…im wiff u 110%….im now an angry Bermudian as well….i have been waiting for someone else wiff the same ideals to come along ….too much rhetoric talk from 99.9% of the Bernews Fan club…TIME FOR ACTION

      • Skink says:

    • Rory says:

Im sure Mike Zimmerman felt the same way

      • uuuuuh? says:

@Rory: Who is Mike Zimmerman? I know of George Zimmerman did I miss something?

Bit of a difference there though, as Trayvon Martin was not trying to break in but was merely walking in the neighbourhood with a hoodie on which looked “suspicious”

I know if someone breaks in my house they will not be getting anything other than a funeral.

  4. JAWS says:

Bernews get their photos and post them on here, for all Bermuda to see.

  5. Truth is killin' me... says:

I would pay to throw rotten tomatoes at all of them in the stocks while an amred Police Officer officiated the public act of humiliation. Only after they had been proven guilty of course!

    • pepper says:

I would pay to through my aunts hard cross buns at them….

      • Peachy cream says:

Hahaha aha. Now that’s funny!!! I’ll throw my sisters too lmao

  6. Hmmmmm says:

Unlike Craig, the Minister spoke when he had something to say.

    • Hmmmm says:

There waslenty to say about the state we are in, the fear we live with everyday. Everytime I drive along northshore and see bikes with riders with Dark visors I’m on high alert, I’m checking around my house, making sure windows are shut and doors are locked at all times.

Ps is this the first time the ministe has ever had anything to say…would this indicate that othertimes he has nothing or merit to say.

  7. Vix says:

    CAN THE CHURCH SAY AMEN!!!!

  8. Mad Dawg says:

    Names?

  9. smith says:

I’ll bet it’s that little 4-some posse from Somerset. You know that lot…

  10. I have to agree with minister Scott that we in the community need to play a greater role in being our brothers keeper and protecting our neighborhoods by being on the look out for anything or anyone who is out of place, seeing something and not taking the right steps could cost you more then you think and seeing something and taking the wrong steps can cost you also,so it is important to use wisdom and keep the politics out of things that concern all of our safety,it any political side or individual is pressing for the safety of our country we the public should endorse it and not see it as browny points and the same can be said if any politician is pursuing the element of crime prevention for political gain, that individual deserves more then the cat of nine tails.

  11. Specialgirl4You says:

Minister and the BPS have communicated on this matter from the beginning. Both have been at work to see how the matter could be addressed. Well done BPS for finding the persons behind this crime. The Minister spoke at the right time publicly, to address this matter. Work has never stop from the moment the incident occurs. Well done BPS!!!

    • Mad Dawg says:

Oh really, the Minister was involved in this then? I guess the finger pointing about oversight of the BPS can no longer be an excuse for the increase in crime then.

    • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

yea now get your DPP in order now …oh wait they can only work off of the evidence collected and put forth to them from who..? oh yea the BPS…which way is the finger gonna point in the end huh?

    • Hmmmm says:

Liar liar here she comes again, the PLP propaganda paid blogger

  12. Just sayin says:

Thank you Bermuda Police Service, we are proud of you all.

    • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

You All need to take a break on the “atta boys”…geesh
problems are nowhere near solved ok…whoever these 4 are, will be out and about in no time.

      • Hmmmm says:

Exactly. The won’t be in until they die, will they. The causes of this subculture, need to be addressed. PLP have failed and on a daily basis make it worse.

  13. rummy says:

    Same sheet differant day.
This has nothing to do with Mr. Cannonier.
It’s just grand standing by the Minister.

And of course special girl jumps in nd thanks the BPS.

    Nothing but propaganda.

Read the comments on all subjects here on Bernews.

Mr. Cannonier is not a Minister nor holds no portfolio per sey.

Is he an elected member of Parliament?

    The process says one thing.

  14. YES MATE! says:

Good job Bobbylon, keep up the good work. Nows let’s hope the DPP doesn’t eff up the prosecution.

  15. David says:

When and if they are found to be guilty……. release the pictures so the world can know who these goats are. Also, it is time to hire Lions to tame the goats. No more mr. nice guy. Matter of fact, let’s tweak the law a bit so that the time fits the crime (for real), and ensure that no money grabbing lawyers can get a criminal off on a technicality. After all….. Right is right and wrong is wrong. We are society, the government and law are meant to serve and protect us. It is time we dictate to the legal paternities of how a case is handled, instead of simply accepting the nicely twisted lingo of the legal paternities, while the criminals seem to get off with a slap on the wrist. Punishment for the crime.

  16. hang them says:

i sound like that little bad you laday ms *** she need to put away for good

  17. Sick n Tired says:

SMDH . . . you all are turning every little thing into a political one because its an election year. What the hell is the OBA or the BDA going to do differently??? Someone please explain???????

    • Eastern says:

      @ Sick n Tired:

      Um um…….balance the books maybr?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Govern in the sunshine of public scrutiny. Be accountable. Make sure that contracts are bid on fairly. Make sure that projects cost what they are contracted for. Get serious about stopping money bleeding Bermuda is doing now then reducing that debt, something that will take years to do even with skilled people managing it.

      Little things like those.

  18. Truth is killing' me... says:

Let’s hope that ZBM gets some real close pictures of these freaks if they go to court. I would pay them to camp outside the courts until they are brought in. The public needs to see who these lowlifes are! Their families should be ashamed but they probably are not.

  19. your joking says:

There is a lot of talk about beating the crap out of thieves if they come to your homes……..wouldn’t want to be a PLP candidate before an election right now…lol

  20. Shades of Grey says:

Clearly someone knew something so it perhaps wasn’t a random attack. I guess this is a slight bit of good news – but not for the victims of course.

If they do come to my house I will welcome them with my baseball bat. It may be the last thing they ever experience.

  21. CQ 1993 says:

Fools real problem. Stop doing crime. People won’t want to break in your hose to get what u got. Or to rob u or to kill I for it. You all have missed the point. Ask yourself why u ate not being targeted and then spend more time guiding those which need to change their way of life.

  22. For the large amount of people that come out and support May 24th and Cup Match, those should be the same large numbers that need to be on Front Street. Protesting and standing together as a community to literally say enough is enough shouldn’t be that difficult to do. No matter what race or culture we all live in the same Bermuda. Actions speak louder than just words.

  23. Yes says:

Hang em high! And bring in a shoot to kill policy for the police!

  24. Future Thoughts says:

Bermuda’s life sentences need to be served in a higher security level prison, not a moderate crime correctional facility. Bermuda’s correctional facility is not for people serving life sentences nowadays as Bermuda has changed. Gov needs to send Bermuda’s maximum crimes to international maximum prisons. Not only will it serve as a deterrent, but it will stop gang breeding in Bermuda’s facilities and save gov money as it is $80,000+ annually per inmate in BDA, and $24,000-$45,000 per inmate in the US. Meaning you can pay the maximum security prison much extra for the housing and still come out on top!

    • Peachy cream says:

The best and most sensible comment on here. Not because I’ve also been saying this for a long time but because it makes sense as WG is nothing but a playground to these wannabes. Leave WG for the petty criminals and send the rest out of here. Bet they’ll cry for mommy then. But mommy won’t be there! Nor will their ace boys gf’s babies mamas.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Saw a program on a prison in Siberia not too long ago. Seemed like a very nice place for Bermudas murderers & violent long timers to be sent.

If you get sent there, you will never want to be sent back. It will turn prisoners into parsons.

  25. Ministers are also like to know general discussions for their election purpose.

  26. honesty says:

Honestly I cant believe that we have come to this type of thinking in 2012, Until you know anything about this case which you probably will never be privis to or the truth of it ever be revealed, you will stone these children, or wish them dead that’s not corporal punishment, you are definately living in the past and guess what should you live long enough for these same boys to be reunited to our society they might be the same boys that may be expected to care for your future and the future of this country, take heed and care of what you wish for!!! The lack of opportunity to allow our young men to progress and become productive people in our society is a big problem, you can’t steel people’s identity and endeavours and expect for them to act in a way that is condusive to your views, it just doesn’t work that way, maybe there’s a hidden agenda or design being created.
