Phillips Named To Provisional UK Olympic Team
Bermuda’s Sullivan Phillips has been named to the Great Britain’s provisional men’s basketball squad for the 2012 Olympics.
Mr Phillips has been named alongside 21 players, including NBA players Ben Gordon, Byron Mullens and Luol Deng, who play for the Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls and the Charlotte Bobcats respectively.
Coach Chris Finch will reduce the group to 16 in May and then make a final cut to 12 at the start of July. Mr Finch said: “We have the potential for a world-class team who will surprise a few people this summer.
“The commitment from all our players to the programme once again is great and it’s also good to see our strength and depth continuing to increase year on year.”
Great Britain preliminary squad: Kieron Achara, Ogo Adegboye, Robert Archibald, Eric Boateng, Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Dan Clark, Luol Deng, Joe Freeland, Ben Gordon, Kyle Johnson, Mike Lenzly, Andrew Lawrence, Alex Marctullio, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Byron Mullens, Sullivan Phillips, Nate Reinking, Ryan Richards, Ovie Soko, Andrew Sullivan and Devon Van Oostrum.
Mr Phillips is one of the few Bermudians to have played professional basketball. The 6ft 6″ basketballer has played in England, Hungary, Czech Republic and Cyprus and has been twice been named as defensive player of the year in both Hungary and Cyprus. He signed with Slovakian team Prievidza last year.
