Map And Notes For BEST “Information Walk”

May 27, 2012

The Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce [BEST], in cooperation with Warwick residents, is holding an “Information Walk” around the Grand Atlantic housing site on South Road in Warwick, today [May 27] between 6pm and 8pm.

A statement from BEST said, “The 40-minute walk will begin from the parking areas on the western end of the Southlands property. We will enter the beach at the western end of Southlands Beach and walk east along the beach (on the public property below the high water mark), noting points of interest along the Grand Atlantic stretch.

Text of the self-guidance notes for the walk, written by Dr David Wingate:

“Walkers will exit the beach at Astwood Walk — along a strip of land donated to the Bermuda public by Sir James Astwood’s family. We will then walk west along the roadside back to the parking lot at Southlands.

“Here is the map of the walk and the text of the self-guidance notes for the walk [written by David Wingate]. The notes point out five significant features of the Grand Atlantic development along the walk.” The PDF file can be downloaded here.

  1. Wee Pow says:

Can we have the engineer’s name who wrote the report?

  2. Accurate? says:

if the statements above in the notes for the walk are accurate then these should have been disclosed to the Bank as a risk factor for them to make a decision on whether they wanted to underwrite this, have defects been disclosed to the Insurer(s)? this is starting to look like a concrete elephant

  3. Grouper says:

So you have a choice of a unit that might plunge into the ocean during/after a hurricane or one right by South Road, one of the busiest roads in Bermuda, opposite a very busy bar/restaurant. Also, if you do buy, you have to get Bda. Housing Corp. permission to sell and they can control the sales price. Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll take my chances elsewhere. Good luck to anyone who is silly enough to buy. I’m sure house insurance will cost an arm & leg, never mind the Mortgage risk.
I guess Govt. will have to continually/constantly pay to have the cliff face repaired/restored like Boaz Island, but not sure where that money is going to come from. May be a special waterfront tax for all waterfront properties?

  4. star man says:

To demonstrate just how clueless the builders of the Grand Atlantic Projects are, the so-called “seawall’ they thought would prevent erosion of the sand cliff… the experts say this “seawall” will actually ACCELERATE erosion! Only in Bermuda.

Don’t think anyone’s living there yet either.

    • Liars! says:

l don’t know if l would have used “clueless” there Einstein, actually they have a brilliant lay-out, not to mention the convenience of town and the beaches at your doorstep. They are very low maintenance facilities with renewable energy capabilities, not to mention they are actually reasonably priced….and kept alot of Bermudians working throughout the storm. So stop whinning and go get a job instead of thinking your so good that it will come to you!

      • Family Man says:

You should buy two then Patrick; one for you and one for Spongebob.

      • Red Appletalk says:

Town at your doorstep???? Did they move Hamilton?

    • Red Appletalk says:

The builder only build where and how as illustrated in the drawings. My guess would be that drawings are prepared by architects and engineers with direction from the client.

      • Family Man says:

Wish we could see those drawings don’t you?

  5. Stepping Razor says:

freshly measured…by our resident eco-espionage Xpert:
middle unit on the cliff side is 44 ft to the cliff and it is beyond vertical (so it is actually less then 44ft to the vertical plane…)

the western most unit is 34 ft from cliff edge (but it is not vertical for a few more few feet beyond).

These numbers are exact with a tape and by jumping the fence. Well under the 50ft De foreign engineers recommended and blatantly way off our government propaganda which has it at 65ft…

another example of the lack of Government credibility. Paula you are all talk. I can see right through your current transparency mandate. Its BS. Bring on de elackshaun this summer, we desperately need a clean of house.

  6. Concerned Citizen says:

Another issue by mr. Hayward in an attempt to maintain some relevancy! Smh

    • Rumandcoke says:

You are quite wrong ‘Concerned’. Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Hayward and Best for trying to bring this to the forefront. Absolutely unbelievable that the PLP could ever condone this destruction of our environment. Everyone should go down there to see for themselves this travesty of wrecking our environment….. beaches that are the golden goose for the tourism industry. Makes you want to cry for Bermuda.

    • More with less says:

Go do some research smh, basic biology and stuff like that would help. Importance of trees, green space, etc. It would be a totally different story if these units were actually needed at the cost of the environment, but as you can see for yourself, not needed. All that beautiful land hacked for nothing, it’s disgusting. We are 22 square miles and building for the sake of building is purely ignorant.

  7. Come correct says:

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you got till it’s gone
They paved paradise and put up a housing block

They took all the trees, and put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people 25 dollars to see em
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you got till it’s gone
They paved paradise, and put up a housing block.

  8. star man says:

These Projects were designed with an incredible lack of “taste” IMHO. In fact most feel they are downright UGLY and do NOT suit the community or the waterfront… In reality these buildings are an ugly blight on our environment, along with the oversized gas station they are building up the road. Who was the architect, or did they just reuse the plans for the Loughlands development??

At least these buildings could be painted different pastel colors; that may help Bermudianize the boxes. I guess if you want to live in a third floor walk-up box, go ahead!……. but not at those prices!!

  9. leveller says:

They’re building battery farms for humans
    where houses stood before
Where there used to be just one family
now they’re tryin’ to keep 24
There’s no shops, playgrounds no boozers,
    in the architects’ great plan
You may wanna live like a chicken my friend,
but I wanna live like a man.

  10. Rumandcoke says:

Bermudians need to walk on the “Southlands Beach” to see for themselves the amount of erosion there is to the cliffs. (There is a good pathway down to the beach opposite Southlands). It needs to be seen by everyone to be believed.
Just who did the Environmental Impact study?? And what government allowed the monstrosity, Grand Atlantic, to be erected in such a fragile ecological area. Obviously a Government that cares nothing about the environment.
    This must never happen again.

    • star man says:

For some dumb reason the PLP Government often refuses to take the advice of local experts. In this case, and in many, many others as well.

Big egos I guess. We know EVERYTHING!

      NOT!!
