BPSU Calls Meeting For Government Workers

The Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] called a membership meeting for Government workers, with the meeting to be held at 3.30pm on Wednesday June 27th at the St Paul AME Centennial Hall on Court Street. The reason behind the meeting is to update on the Public Service Superannuation Fund.

    The superannuation fund is grossly underfunded and is unsustainable under Bermuda’s huge debt burden. Public sector workers need to be moved ASAP to a defined contribution plan equal to what workers in the private sector get.

    You are correct that the present benefit plan is unsustainable and this is the case everywhere in the world. Something will have to be done sooner rather than later but most countries have placed new employees on a defined contribution plan not old or existing ones as that would be very complicated to do.

    Can we please get some clarity here, is this a government workers meeting or is it a BPSU members government workers meeting. We surely don’t need another misunderstanding and have some people escorted out like in previous occasions.
