Grand Opening Of B-Side Art Exhibition

Over 50 people attended the official Grand Opening of the B-Side Art Exhibition on Sunday [June 24]. Those who attended the opening were treated to the sounds of Chewstick and also indulged in refreshments provided by Fish & Tings and Goslings Ltd.

Located on 43 Angle Street, the opening of the art gallery is a significant accomplishment for the N.E. Hamilton area and features the works of Manuel Palacio and numerous other local artists.

The Gallery will be open from Tuesdays – Saturdays between 11 AM – 7 PM every week from June – September 2012. The B-Side Art Exhibition is a collaboration among the North East Hamilton EEZ, Entrepreneurs James & Helen Tyrell Sr., and Artist Manuel Palacio.

James Tyrell, Minister Minors and Manuel Palacio:

The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Patrice Minors was on hand for the official ribbon cutting witnessed by family members of building owners, and organizer/artist Manuel Palacio. Minister Minors stated “as evidenced by the attendees, this event shows how art can encourage diversity.

“We are thankful to Manuel Palacio for approaching the EEZ with this fabulous idea which creates new opportunities for Bermudians and are happy to be involved in the successful delivery of N.E. Hamilton’s first Art Gallery”.

The Minister further indicated “the event is another example of Bermudians working together to help each other because it could not have been possible without the support of the local business community.”

B-Side Art Gallery:

Minister Minors thanked owner James Tyrell Sr. for recognizing the importance and value of art enough to make available his building as the home of the gallery.

This current Art Exhibition showcased a diverse collection of art which included 3-dimensional pieces, traditional paintings and abstract works. Ten local Artists submitted works which will be on display.

Some of the artists include Gavin Smith, Antoine Hunt, Callix Smith and Ami Saunders. Roxanne Christopher, N.E. Hamilton Economic Development Officer commented that the works on display were a testament to the talent that exists locally in Bermuda.

B-Side Gallery entrance:

Manuel Palacio stated “he was very pleased with the way the show turned out and that he is looking forward to his continuing work with the NEHEEZ as the gallery becomes bigger and better through to September.”

A spokesperson said, “This initiative aligns with the EEZ’s Community Development outreach which provides an opportunity for creative ideas and revitalization of the N.E. Hamilton community. Art can help entrepreneurs build market share and enhance their brand, and it has been proven that creativity is one of the top skills that employers desire.

“When approached by Mr. Palacio with the proposal, the North East Hamilton EEZ jumped at the opportunity to host such a ground breaking art exhibition in the EEZ community which will provide eclectic activity, attract new visitors, and engage the community in sharing the benefits of Arts and Culture.”

N.E. Hamilton Economic Development Officer, Roxanne Christopher:

Ms. Christopher remarked “through exhibitions, performances and workshops, the arts provide opportunities for people to grapple with community concerns and become more familiar with their neighbours, whether next door, in the next parish, at the ends of the island, or around the world”.
