Power Outage Affects Some Hamilton Offices
[Updated] The Bermuda Housing Corporation is presently without telephone and email communication due to a BELCO power outage this morning [June 19] which impacted the Gibbons Company, Russell Eve and Crawford House buildings.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Housing Corporation [BHC] located at the Russell Eve Building, 21 Church Street, Hamilton would like to advise the public that as a result of a BELCO power outage this morning, all telephone lines are down.
“This has caused a total loss of telephone and email communication. BELCO is addressing the problem. However, power is not expected to be returned to normal at the BHC until midnight, Tuesday, 19 June 2012. BHC will advise when power has been restored.
“The BHC apologizes in advance for this disruption to its services.”
Update 1.07pm: A BELCO spokesperson said, “At approximately 6:35 PM on Monday, June 18, a fault occurred on an underground cable affecting the Gibbons Company, Russell Eve and Crawford House buildings near the corner of Church and Burnaby Streets.
“BELCO has located the underground fault and a contractor has commenced excavation work. When excavation is completed, repair work can begin; repair work is expected to start later this afternoon or early evening.
“BELCO has been in constant communication with building managers, who are working to provide temporary electricity feeds to tenants. Power was restored earlier today to Gibbons Company’s store. BELCO hopes to have all power restored by midnight, June 19. The cause of the cable fault is under investigation.”
Update 9.12pm: BELCO said the repairs are complete, with all service restored to customers at Church, Burnaby at approx. 8:00om, ahead of the midnight target set earlier today. A spokesperson said “BELCO thanks customers for their patience. The cause of the underground fault remains under investigation.”
