Interns Take Up Community Day Challenge

July 31, 2012

For the fourth summer running student interns from some of Bermuda’s leading companies have spent a “Community Day” doing their bit for charity.

The Centre on Philanthropy once again coordinated this event which saw over 70 volunteers from 11 companies complete 13 projects for local charities. The projects included everything from cleaning the BAMZ seawater reservoir to meal preparation at Meals on Wheels.

“Every summer the students bring their enthusiasm and energy to these projects,” said Jennifer Pitcher, Volunteer Coordinator for The Centre. “It’s incredible what can be done in just one day, and they have a lot of fun too!”

One of the ways the students have fun is through some friendly competition. Last year The Centre held a Facebook Photo Challenge for the event that proved so popular they’ve run it again this year.

For the competition each group of students was “challenged” to take a photo that represented their project, and their company, and submit it to The Centre’s Facebook page. They now have until Tuesday July 31st to encourage the most ‘likes’ for their photo and the team with the most likes wins the Challenge. Participating companies for this Community Day were; ACE Group, BELCO, Bank of Butterfield, Deloitte, Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd., Ernst & Young Ltd., KPMG, Oil Management Services Ltd., PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ariel Re Bermuda Limited, and XL Group with twelve local charities for a day of volunteering.

The charities and their activities were; Bermuda Zoological Society (cleaning water reservoir), BIOS (gardening and painting), Centre Against Abuse (painting), Gina Spence Productions in Christ (mural painting), Masterworks Foundation (painting), Meals on Wheels (meal preparation and painting), National Museum of Bermuda (cleaning boat lofts), P.A.L.S. (cleaning woodwork and windows), The Eliza Dolittle Society (organising food donations), The Salvation Army – Thrift Store (organising clothes), Westmeath (painting), and Summerhaven Residential Home for Physically Challenged (gardening).

The Community Day pairings were as follows: BIOS with XL Group; BAMZ with PwC; Masterworks with PwC; The National Museum of Bermuda with PwC and Oil Management Services Ltd.; Meals on Wheels with Endurance Speciality Insurance Ltd. and Ernst & Young Ltd.; Centre Against Abuse with Deloitte; P.A.L.S. with KPMG; Salvation Army with KPMG; The Eliza Dolittle Society with ACE Group; Gina Spence Productions in Christ with BELCO; Summerhaven with Ariel Re; and Westmeath with Bank of Butterfield.

A spokesperson said, “The Centre would like to thank all the companies and charities for participating in the Community Day, and the Facebook Photo Challenge.

“The Centre facilitates three Community Days each year by giving local charities the opportunity to submit volunteer projects that can be completed in one day. The Centre then encourages participation from companies, and projects are chosen based on the interest expressed by employees.

“This year The Centre also inaugurated a “Family Community Day” to give families an opportunity to help charities with important projects. To learn more about The Centre’s Community Days and other volunteer opportunities you can visit our website.”
