Jeff Baron Sponsors Two Summer Students

July 12, 2012

Jeff Baron visited ‘Camp Possible’ inside Hamilton Seventh Day Adventist Church today [July 12] where he donated $1,500 to sponsor the summer camp fees for two of the students.

Camp Director Kennisha Mallory had contacted Mr Baron asking for assistance with the camp, which is located in Pembroke South East, the constituency where Mr Baron is running for the One Bermuda Alliance.

“Sitting off at home while your parents are away working all summer should never be the go-to solution for a six-year-old boy on summer holiday, and yet this is a reality for some families who struggle during these times,” said Mr. Baron.

“I was moved when Kennisha called and asked me to help these two children. This, for me, was an opportunity to support a small business owner and the children of two working families. It was also a way to invest in two young Bermudians eager to experience a summer with meaningful social and educational interaction during their summer away from school”.

The two children, aged six and 10, called Mr Baron at home to thank him the day they learned that their camp experience was going to be fully funded until the end of August.

Ms Mallory initially contacted Mr. Baron in June when she learned that he was a candidate for the Pembroke South East, the constituency where the camp is located. The two subsequently met to discuss the opportunities that the camp provided the children and their families.

“I take my role as Parliamentary candidate in Pembroke South East very seriously, and will continue to do what I can to understand and represent constituents’ concerns and do what I can to make a difference in their lives. You can talk about it or you can be about it, Its that simple,” said Mr. Baron.

“The concerns and challenges of this community will not wait until after election day. That’s why I’m doing what I can now to help out and work with people.”

Mr Baron will match up against Rolfe Commissiong in Constituency #21, Pembroke South East at the next General Election.

  1. RUFKM says:

    Bernews, are you serious.

Man has money, gives it to children to go to camp. Sends press release to exploit the unfortunate.

Jeff Baron: Here is a hint, people respect you more for what you do when you don’t tell them. When you have to tell them, it means you are exploiting others for your own Gain. (But dunkley did it this week to civil servants so I guess it runs in the family)

Wonder if he would have done this if he was running for office. DOUBTFUL

Good on you for doing it, SHAME on YOU for EXPLOITING kids

  2. RUFKM says:

Dunkley must have taught him well, dunkley gives out milk, Baron pays for camp. At least Dunkley doesn’t send a press release…. This is disgusting!

  3. Bewildered says:

An interesting comment. Did you make a similar comment when Dr Brown had a photo op to announce he was adopting two schools? When David Burch had a photo op to announce he is adopting a school, that’s also OK with you. Many many more similar photo ops, but apparently you only cry foul when it is not a PLP person. Does “runs in the family” sound familiar?

  4. Scott Stewart says:

Well done, Jeff, it’s great for the kids!

  5. LaVerne Furbert says:

I know of many politicians who donate to worthy causes but they would never think sending a press release to Bernews.

I know of one MP in particular who has supported a young, Bermudian student who is in college for the past 6 months. Prior to that he supported another young Bermudian single mother who went back to college.

And speaking of Dr. Brown, if he called Bernews every time he donated to a worthy cause, you all would be complaining bitterly.

    • Shaking the Head says:

We would I’m sure because he was probably using taxpayers’ money. LaVerne, you need to get over this hero worshipping, Dr. Brown is a person, just like the rest of us.
I also know of many people, not politicians, who do wonderful things without publicity, so what is your point?

      • exactly says:

        @LaVerne.
When EB donated it was out of the public purse. This man is doing out of his own money. I give much kudos to Mr. Baron for helping these two children.

  6. Ronnie says:

Blah blah blah!! Geesh people….Really!! Can’t you just applaud him for helping these youngsters ! Why must there always be negativity when someone does something good! Who gives a rats you know what if it makes the papers. Get over it! You call yourselves adults?!

  7. KENNISHA says:

Exploit- means to use someone or a situation to get some benefit for yourself. This is the meaning of exploit. Mr. Baron helped two kids, their struggling parents and a camp. I think the word exploit is the wrong word choice. Bermuda, we as people need to look on this story and say,”awwwwww” not ridicule him for being kind. How many people out there would have sponsored a kid for the summer??? Not you huh RUFKM!!! You will make this story bigger then it is and make people feel ashamed because of their financial status. Think before you type, before slandering Mr. Baron. He is very kind and sent at least an hour playing with the kids today. You are just looking at a story NOT the man behind the story!!! THANKS AGAIN MR.BARON AND THE OBA, FROM CAMP POSSIBLE AND ITS STAFF, ALSO THE SPONSORED KIDS AND THEIR PARENTS!!! WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AGAIN, AND YES BERNEWS CAN REPORT AGAIN!!!!!!

    • Clear View says:

Although this was a very good act which would ultimately benefit the kids, it just leaves to question the motivation of providing the funds.
And the word exploit was used, I’m sure because if this was not an election year the gesture may have not been as easily carried out, which would mean that he did this act to benefit (politically, socially, whichever). That explanation does seem logical and hence the exploitation comments.

  8. Angry Tax Payer says:

Good job Jeff Baron, keep up the good work!!

  9. Rockfish #1 and #2 says:

@ The Defender/8 votes, and RUFKM

Would you care to comment on the Burch and Brown “adoptions”?

Most Bermudians became aware of them by reading the newspapers and watching the news.

  10. Truth is killin' me... says:

RUFKM you are bitter person. KARMA!!!

  11. Peace says:

Who are we to judge articles like these making the media whether it was the donors doing or not. Stay focused. He did a good deed. Geesh. A shame how we put our focus and energy on negativity than the positive of what human beings do. Must we always be so negative? That’s why we are getting nowhere fast. This political party is better than that one, blah blah blah. Thank you Jeff for blessing these two kids. Thank you ewart for blessing those you blessed. Thank you col Burt for adopting the school and the list goes on, media or no media. When you bless, a bless comes back always. When you curse, guess what comes back. May we all realize that we on this island give not to receive but to bless others. Peace be to you all. That’s 2 less children hanging out on the street. Peace.

  12. The nitty gritty says:

The hypocrisy of LF and RUFKM! First they are outraged by what they perceive as Jeff blowing his own horn ( despite the fact that he was approached by Ms Mallory for help) then they proceed to blow Ewarts horn (that didnt come out right did it?!)
Know why these parents cant go to Government for sponsorship???
    Sorry I can’t explain it, I’ve run out of crayons and puppets.;

  13. Happy Bermudian says:

Congratulations Jeff. Despite what the haters say, you have done a good thing. And congratulations to Camp Possible who were successful in finding sponsorship.

  14. Bermyman says:

PLP supporters attack this man because he is white. Jeff has been on UN peace keeping missions before, for the greater good of humanity. Do you think he cares about publicizing himself. But RUFKM who speaks on behalf of the PLP wants to attack him, he has a good heart and it is important that this is reported to set examples to other individuals who also may want to contribute. We need people like him in Bermuda, they help children who will one day be adults. If we do not help these kids then we risk further social turmoil. But the PLP don’t want you to trust the evil white man. The attitude of RUFKM is disgusting and reflects this entirely. We are one Bermuda and we need to look out for each other no matter what financial or ethnic background we come from!
