Audio: Collie Buddz, Twanee Remake Old Classic

August 16, 2012

As part of the Bermuda Department of Tourism’s new branding campaign, the old Bermuda classic ‘Bermuda is Another World’ has been remade featuring local singers Collie Buddz and Twanee Butterfield.

‘Bermuda is Another World’ was originally written and performed by Hubert Smith, and Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert said the Bermuda Department of Tourism was “thrilled” to incorporate the song into their campaign.

Minister Furbert described the song as “classic with a modern twist” and said, “This song is not only beloved here in Bermuda but does a better job than any other in describing the magic and beauty that is our island.”

Update Aug 17: A static video we did with the audio has been added above, the MP3 is still available here. You can also watch videos of the new tourism commercials which feature snippets of the song here.

not quite sure about it… love collie and twanee though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Walla Walla says:

I was psyched to hear that the two of them were going to do a remake of the song…until I heard it. Vocals were fine, no criticizm there.. but Im not feeling the lyric changes. I tried to like it until I hard we had ONEY BEEZ (where are we Jamaica?) I was thinking it was going to be more of an uptempo and updated (musically not vocally) version. Or maybe something like the Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole remake that showed her and her father (decades before) in the same video. I thought something like that would have been appealing to both the baby boomer generation (that came here in the hubert smith days) and the younger generation that could relate to the Tawanee and CB.

I applaud the effort and love the idea in principle, but I think we can all agree that this one needs to go back to the studios.

Again, Im not trying to be negative as I love the idea and the direction of this campaign – just not “feelin the love” !

      • Cinderella says:

If BDOT says ‘we have so much more’, maybe they will have a few of our singers taking turns doing the vocals over the year.

  2. Tried says:

Not sure um feelin this one mates…

  3. Beauty & Intelligence says:

Hmmmm. Intersting concept. Good effort but if you want this to last long then they should rethink who they have chosen.

It really would be nice if just once the people that are in charge of making decisions really know what they are doing!

This song is NO comparison for “Proud to be Bermudian”! #Epic Fail

  4. cheekumsbi says:

i like the original 100% better however well done to Twanee and Collie Buddz, i guess this will have to grow on me after hearing it maybe 18 billion times from the radio stations

    • Walla Walla says:

I know that is true with musinc on the radio. I agree 100% But most times you get one shot at making a lasting impression. I don’t think the idea of the tourism campaign is to have Bermuda grow on you. The idea is to make an imression and an impact right away and make people think – I have to go there and at the same time remamber where “there” is! Like the successful “hands Up – baby hands up, give me you heart” campaign by Club med, or the “One Love” campaign by Jamaica. The songs made an impact and stuck in your head and helped with the branding! If the song does not make an instant impression and makes our target market think – I want to go there – or I want to go BACK there again its just bacground noise.

  5. CYGNET says:

Loving this song. Uncle Hubert Smith would have given his approval.

    • don't think so says:

      I don’t think so…

      • Grizz Smith says:

I actually think that both Twanee and Collie sound nice but can’t help feeling a little weird about my uncle’s song being changed. I have to disagree and say that I don’t think he would have approved. Some things are best left in their original state. But it’s done now…c’est la vie! congrats to Twanee and Collie

  6. What Options says:

This can work… Bermudians are doing it!

  7. Spider says:

Collie shoulda sang it solo. Twanee is just an ok singer.

    • Daisy says:

I agree. There are other Bermudian singers I think can sing better than Twanee. Not really feeling this song…..

  8. The track sounds like ballet dub…..should have come harder.

  9. Liars! says:

this song sounds rediculous and kindergarden! l can’t believe Budz wouls sing this stupid song for the Minister of BS!!!

How much did we pay Budz for this?

PEE L PEE is a joke!

Furbert’s little dreams he had when he didn’t sell his soul to the Devil are coming true, too bad there will be an aftermath, fool!

    • CYGNET says:

@ Liars. You have the right to not like the song, but no reason to be insuting to Colie Budz. He an Twanee sound great. And leave the politics out of it. When Proud to be Bermudian came out that was labled an “OBA” song. Go outside and take some breaths in the nice cool breeze outside.

  10. SummerBreeze says:

Sorry, not a fan of how this sounds, but I like the ads!

  11. Nicholas Scaife says:

Colin, turn yah back on “Dem Haters” mate. Jealousy’s a bitch and there’s a lot of bitches on this website always moaning and complaining. Keep up the good work. Peace!

    • SummerBreeze says:

      Look Nicholas, dont even start!
I don’t know what’s your beef, but you’re barking up the wrong tree…Mate!

This has nothing to do with hate, some people will like the music and others won’t, so save your immature rhetoric for your own party of excuses, cause no way in the world that I have any reason to be jealous of any artist just because I, or others, do not prefer the sound of the song. Those that like it, great, others say they don’t. Some will like the ad campaign (like I did) but others won’t, so, if they don’t like the the new tourism ad then are you also saying it’s because they’re jealous and filled with hate and are b’s? Please.

Remember, you too are on this website, so the names you refer people to you refer to yourself. Please, get a grip, and respect people’s opinions, [like, or dislike] enough is enough…please show in your choice of words, Peace!….

Great job otherwise, Bermuda Dept. of Tourism, BDOT, I really like the ad but not too much the song, but good job…

      • Nicholas Scaife says:

@SummerBreeze Whatever brah. If you’ve got nothing good to say then don’t say nothing at all! That’s my motto and I’m sticking to what I said. Peace!

        • Tommy Chong says:

Must be hilarious seeing you speak in backstreet Bermudian slang like seeing colin do the fake patois. No body is hating its just that when you’re a music artist its better to bring the real because after a while people get smart & catch on. Artist like UB40 have made it without having to change their accent it may be a bit harder because they’ve got to fit their voice into that niche but its worth it in the end. It’s all good though! Consider collie Bermuda’s own version of Vanilla Ice. LMAO

          • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Tommy Chong: Had to squawk at the idea that Collie is our version of Vanilla Ice!

Seriously, what is with the phony Jamaican accent? If you must have an accent, what is wrong with our own dialect? Seems like internalized Bermuda-phobia to me, and it infects so many of us.

The song is a nice try and clearly someone is trying to use some imagination, which is more than can be said for the lack-luster campaigns of the past few years.

        • SummerBreeze says:

So am I and many others with our opinions – good job BDOT, but the song needs a bit more to it, no ones hating on our obvious talented artists, but this one just didn’t quite make the hit….

    • Lori King says:

I Love it! Keep up the good work! Keep the negative comments to yourselves!

  12. Liars! says:

Whatever boyz, this song sounds like a really bad Kerioki song in some little town in butt ___k knowhere …Bermuda is really another world……look at this Minister

    • welldone says:

If you are gonna criticize you should probably learn how to spell.

      The word is karaoke.

  13. Yng Black Mind says:

Now – - first off, I have been performing since the age of 4. I have recorded overseas with numerous artists and have been involved in the entertainment industry (locally and internationally) for years.

I provided that background first to validate my opinion below:

Based on the fact that this recording is going to be used for advertising, it is a fair attempt. It is not good enough to be released as a single – but that is not the intent.

It appears rushed in it’s production quality and there is no real “gel” with the melodic lines of the two artists (possibly no fault of theirs).

My opinion is that it isn’t great, but it is a fair remake of the most classic “local” song from Bermuda.

    Yng Black Mind
    (those who know understand)

    • .am says:

I think you’d have to actually say who you are for your ‘background’ to count for squat.

  14. K says:

    I like it!

  15. proudtobeBermudian says:

    Its aaaiight….

  16. Lisa says:

Not liking it so far maybe it will grow on me. Collie sounds nice but Twanee makes it sound like a Christmas carol.

  17. BdaLuvin says:

Just hear it… it sounds like a christmas carol

  18. Opressed says:

If indeed Connie Bugs is Bermudian, why doesn’t he speak like me? Sacrilege.

  19. Fanofboth says:

I agree, twanee is a great singer but her voice doesn’t flow as smoothly as collie’s on this track. However, I think it has a nice ill reggae twist and it’s an upgrade from the last version.

  20. bad choice says:

This is a joke right not good at all all this great talent most be rethinked please think twice

  21. Lmao!!!! says:

    WTF?!?!?!?!?!?

  22. Gregga says:

I liked the old one better, Sounds like they made just for drunk tourist who give a crap either way.

  23. LaVette Fuentes says:

Hmmm, listened to the re-make. I usually give props to Twanee, for doin’ her thing. However, I have to give a Thumbs down for this one. Without breaking it down & telling what it means to be a genuine, authentic singer, I’ll just say the singing voice is not a joke. One must take it seriously at all times. You have to think about it’s delivery before u even open your mouth. You have to style, phrase and present your notes in accordance to the story you are about to tell, so that the listener can see pictures, and maybe relate an experience… Bermuda has a lot of essence. If I didn’t already know the island, I would not have experienced that essence from this demonstration. Mr. Budz, u handled it ok. Your sound & style compensated, giving me a semi relaxed feel. I think Twanee just needs training. She has the highs & lows of a singing voice, but what good is that if you can’t control what comes out? The goal of a singer is not to be auto-tuned, but to first truly have the gift and to always improve upon the gift. She’s an ok singer who WILL get better & better. BUT for now we may have to keep the Talbot brothers…. I comment in love. Much continued success to both Twanee & Mr. Budz.

    • Mom's gingerbread says:

LaVette, I do not like the song, it sounds very amateur . Twanee cannot sing period she always sounds like she is out of breath. Neither can you so don’t come on here trying to give advice, you couldn’t even make it on little old Bermuda got talent. And no I can’t sing either, that’s why I stuck to baking……

      • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Mom’s gingerbread: that is just so rude and unkind, and to no purpose. Whether or not Ms. Fuentes can sing, and I don’t know if she can or not, what she stated with regard to style, delivery and lyricism has truth, and I can’t sing either, but I know about singing. Many young singers have not yet had enough life experience to infuse ‘soul’ into their lyrics, and sing by rote.

        • Down de road says:

I agree with mom’s gingerbread the new version sucks and LaVette can’t sing. IMOP and yeah I’m entitled to my opinion as you are too

  24. Octavia says:

Why did they have to mess with the original? This version is just unpleasant noise!

  25. Dean says:

I LOVE IT…BERMUDA IS SO MUCH MORE!!!

  26. CHEEKUMS BI says:

Ive listened to it 10 times now..im sorry im not hating at all, but but i cant help to notice that Budds sounds like a Jah Faken who is dumbing down his intelligence to sound as if he was brought up in Kingston with Proper educated Patois classes…lol if that is even possible, They are both great aritist i say that with 100% surety but this collab and this choice of song ..no man this wasnt a great choice at all… I wonder who was the “yes men ” in the studio when this was finished…
It just sounds soooooo corny the beat is terrible.. you can hear auto tunes… buddz sounds like a T Pain Buju Bonton, Twanae is over singing budds as if their in competing for best vocalist on the track…its just not a good flow…im actually embarassed for them listening to this….cheekums bi… Imma give it maybe 10 more listens mabe it will grow on me…maybe it needs a remix wit a different beat,….or maybe a live video would amp it up…idk………..nahhh lol i just done 2 more times ive had enough…..roflmao….. why does Collie Buds laugh after he says to touch a flower……..(he’s thinking about the weed flower) cheekums bi to funny

  27. My 2 Cents says:

I like the original WAAAAAAYYYY more! This is a sad excuse for a “remake”. Collie Budz seemed to flow more with the song, Twanee’s voice on the other hand wasn’t the one for this song. While I usually am a fan of hers she most definitely was NOT the one for this song it should have been a solo. But I guess its okay for what it is….

  28. hmmm says:

I honestly don’t know what people gain from just being so negative all the time!

    • Lori King says:

I agree, It’s not like the old one is out the door!

    • Octavia says:

I’m positive when there is something to be positive about.  I’m negative here because this remake of a great classic is just not very good.

  29. WOW says:

lol- FAIL!!!!!! cmon Bermuda, we are competing with the other islands……we need to step our game up!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Unbelievable says:

I agree it does sound like a Christmas Carol. They need to either get them in the studio together and record it or get someone to blend the two tracks together smoother. Also the steel pan thing needs work. I think thats whats making it so Christmasy.
Once that is sorted out I think it will be a great background for commercials!

  31. Tommy Chong says:

What! No side chat of how Bermuda’s another world when de herbs come around. Oh yes! I remember now. Its de herbs you put on your foods like oregano. Harper should think about changing his stage name to cauliflower now that he’s sold out to pops in laws system. Colin now you are de Babylon Boy for sure.

Collie never realise with a little cooperation
like bob he coulda unify relieve the frustration
Instead he want to ride upon plp’s back
No tears or cares if him bredren get locked or dropped

  32. John E says:

Bad Magic. Sorry guys but this is just one of those times when a beautiful Blue and a Vivid Scarlet combine to make a muddy brown. Such a downer. Tourism should use the original.

  33. Bermudasbest says:

silly people!!! this is to be used as an advertising jingle not a hit number one song! I would love to hear this behind some creative visual commercial, i think it will be fun. BTW most of the songs you all hear in the club are garbage and only get recognition when dressed up with a music video. then they become the flavor of the month…

    • Tommy Chong says:

Advertising jingle are supposed to represent the brand they are selling & since the brand is Bermuda not Jamaica collie would have done better to lose the fake accent. When eminem’s song was put on the chrysler commercial he wasn’t asked to change his high pitch voice & probably would have told them where to go if they did. That’s why he was asked to do the multimillion dollar commercial because he represents real detroit & is not twanging his voice to sound like he’s from down south or changing it in other ways.

  34. ECS says:

Lmaooooo havent even listened to the song but these comments have me in tears!! just RUDE!

  35. M.R. says:

I guess it’s this or that ‘Feel The Love’ nightmare.

  36. Collie Buddz is a Fake says:

Twanee is a good representation of Bermuda. But Collie Buddz and that fake Jamaican accent is not a good representation of Bermuda at all!

  37. Honestly says:

I like it! It’s new, using locals, and gives a new vibe to the old version. My opinion!

    • wtf!!! says:

@ Honestly says: Collie Budz is born American, raised in Bermuda, faking a Jaimacan accent!!!Twanee has a good voice, at least its her own accent. the song doesn’t have any real catch to it, or flow, they both sound like backup singers and it is obvious the both of them recorded their parts separately,,Tourism did a rush job, couldn’t even get the two together to collaborate on such an important part of the advertisment.. how can anyone praise this effort that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce.. We should have arranged to use Proud to be Bermudian..I Just LOVE THAT SONG!!!!And the video is already a snapshot of who we are.. Doing more with less motto should have resonated.. We need to stop bigging up Collie Budz as some great singer I have his albums a good listen, I have seen him perform and he lacks the stage personality and warmth.. sorry his backup bands have always been a better attraction for me.. just sayin…Also what is so much better today in Bermuda, Our product certainly needs attention. Back tomthe topic, don’t much care for this second rate song and silly attempt to waste money on yet another song that will be forced down our throats until we can’t help but sing it…I prefer Hubert Smith version…Or Proud to be Bermudian, I JUST LOVE THAT SONG!!!GONNA BUY ANOTHER COPY!!!:-)

  38. Limey says:

    I love it, excellent job!!

  39. Joonya says:

I love Collie’s music for sure, but this is destroying a classic.
And dude, you are singing a song about Bermuda created by a Bermudian legend.
So turn off the Jamaican accent and kick into the Bermudian.. BIE! Wasssrongwiffyu ;)

  40. Yagayo says:

Both of you singing sound like total s*it….twanee …well she always sounds like a bird…plz just give it up….

  41. Truth is killin' me... says:

Check Collie’s bank account and all of yours put together and then see where a put on “Jamiacan accent” will get you! Bye.

  42. starlove says:

    HORRIBLE
so much more? really yea they are right so much more drama so much more murders so much more everything but GOOD
I am sorry but they both sound terrible and this is something a preschooler could have written

  43. Fox_Gap_2 says:

…..this sounds so horrible….and this is coming from someone who (for the most part) likes the music these artists have put out………twanee sounds like trasssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ahahahah oh man!!!! what a way to ruin a CLASSIC song….SMH…..Fox Gap 2: overNout

  44. rkelly says:

    this song is mug….seriously

  45. Fox_Gap_1 says:

I have to agree with the majority of the comments thus far. This is an EPIC FAIL!! “Classic with a modern twist”….There is nothing modern about this at all. The backing track lacks character and punch. It sounds like it came from a Casio keyboard from the 80′s. As for the vocals, they are all over the place. I have followed Collie Buddz career since the beginning and have noticed such a downward spiral in the quality of his music that I have lost hope that he will ever recreate the feel of his first album which I enjoy to this day. I haven’t heard much of Twanee but what I have heard is pretty good. I can’t wrap my head around this one though… If this is the “sound” of Bermuda then we certainly are in trouble. On a positive note tho, perhaps this will work if it is mixed underneath visuals or for commercials with talking, but as a stand alone song…..Buddz and Twanee have failed miserably at this attempt !!

    • Cinderella says:

Re Buddz: classic example of the more the Herb, the worse the verb.
The ads seem very good for encouraging the 20 to 30-somethings, the wedding crew and families, the explorers; and happiness is the constant theme in the photos, which is usually the goal of a good holiday. This attracted my attention.
This is an improvement over the previous ads. I don’t endorse the scooter with shopping bags in tow, especially since very few people smile while riding one!
I do agree that the locals can put their own spin on attracting their friends from abroad through their own media, e.g. Facebook or YouTube, that could go viral. Maybe then the Government would hire the winner.

  46. Cha says:

    Better than Fiyah Marshall!

    • Cha says:

But still not set on the song, pretty poor. I like Buddz but this one wont be hitting the charts.

  47. I n I says:

Twanee is just an elevator music singer. And rum Buddz is a government endorsed fraud. I blaze myself but how does the government promote someone who supports herb, and then lay down such harsh penalties on marijuana to us Bermudians??? I guess frauds stick together. Please do not use this to promote our island. Bottom line, garbage. Stick to the original classic we all know so well. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!! One love Bermy

  48. Tone Deaf says:

It’s not the Artists – it’s the song. Also Collie, “news-flash” this is Bermuda not Jamaica. It’s honey bees – not oney beez!

  49. I dont get caught up in personalities,so let me say that this is a poor re-mix of the original and does no justice to the memory of the late great Hubert Smith Sr, or the the original version of Bermuda is another World. I would also like to see the tourism minister Mr. Wayne Furbert push for the original song as our national song

  50. Paula Burgess says:

I agree that we have to do something to help our island’s decline in our once lucrative tourism market. I’m not really crazy about it, but there are a lot of songs that I am initially not crazy about and end up loving them. Why? Because I listened to them and gave them a chance.

I, like may, will have a different view because I sm Bermudian. I have heard both of these singers before and know that the song is not one of their best efforts. And when you really look at it, it doesn’t have to be. It’s not like they’re auditioning for an international vocal show or somethng. Most jingles or marketing tunes if you notice are not sung with overwhelming vocal power anyway. And why should they be? The vocals should not overshadow the advertisement but capture the listeners interest and encourage them to look at what is being sung about.

I believe that the foreign market will end up liking it very much and I wish the Department of Tourism well with their endeavours. Something has to be done, they promised it would be and an extreme effort being made. Applause!

Whether we like the song or not, it’s being used. And whether I like it or not doesn’t matter. I just pray that it is well received and will even help to bring attention to other artists in our community, because Bermuda has LOADS of talent.

Sometimes the things that we sit up and criticize and condemn end up being the most successful. Let’s give this the chance that it deserves. Because to sit there and go over what could have been done, who should or shouldn’t have sang the song, and criticize the vocal talent of the artists when we really have no room to talk is not just unneccesary. It’s also plain rude.

  51. just my 2cents says:

    #EPIC FAIL. Sorry.

  52. WTH???? says:

Some thing is wrong with all of you ok, cause i just heard the song for the first time and aint a damn thing wrong with that song, and for you people talking about it sounds like

  53. WTH???? says:

sorry didnt get a chance to finsh what i was saying but anyways, it does not sound like a christmas carrol at all what you all need to understand is that the song was not made for you to play on your cd everyday it is a song that will go with the video and help bring the tourist here, you all are missing the DAMN POINT HERE…
ONE THING YOU CANT PLEASE YOU DAMN PEOPLE!!!!

AND ITS FUNNY HOW BEFORE ALL YOU PEOPLE DIDNT LIKE PROUD TO BE A BERMUDIAN BEFORE NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU ALL LIKE IT…

  54. mooksie says:

so easy for them to talk so great about Bermuda. yet they are always off the island!!! this was boring to me

  55. Laurent Vergnac says:

I have never heard the original version of this song, all i can say is I’ve never been to Bermuda,.I heard the song and it pushed me to want to know more and visit the island! I guess it reaches the target audience people: like me who have never been to Bermuda.

    • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Laurent: Yours is really the only voice that really counts here. (although I still wish Collie Budz wouldn’t sing with a fake Jamaican accent – misrepresentation!)

  56. Peaches says:

Not feeling the negativity. These guys are doing something positive. I’ve heard a lot worse from many of the recent superstars that many of us like to listen to. It’s a promotional song and I feel it does the job very well. Even if everyone does not particularly like the style, the changes, or something about it… it’s a start. Why not put your head into offering better suggestions, then? No one is saying this has to be the ONLY promotion. I DO know – we need to start supporting our own people in positive ways – even when we have to criticize something we may not like. That’s the whole reason I loved everything about the song, “Proud to Be Bermudian”… except the fact that it did not represent what’s really happening in Bermuda and the mentality of most of us. Are we REALLY proud to be Bermudian. Many of the things said in these types of forums are very telling. We can’t go around singing “Proud to Be Bermudian” yet diss our fellow Bermudians who try to do something for themselves and their country.

  57. oh no bie says:

no way, this is horrible !! i guess mr buddz father in law put him up to this… zane desilva should have sang on it to.. its basically karaoke … utter garbage

  58. natural MISTIC says:

I would like to make a comment on this one! from the words of the Late Great Bob Marley ,,,,Only Time Will Tell and we will know if this Campanign works and If it was Money Well Spent.

  59. not bad says:

Not bad, shouldve Been Troy Anthony and Twanee, or Canjelae maybe.

  60. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

Just listened a couple more times, and I can see this as background to the new ads. It is catchy, I have to admit.

I still don’t like the fake JA accents that both singers have from time to time, but since there is a significant portion of Bermuda that has also adopted this wannabe JA gangsta style of communication, perhaps it isn’t so much false advertisement as just another manifestation of Bermudian “I hate myself and that place I come from and I don’t want anybody to associate me with it” syndrome that I mentioned before.

  61. Cleancut says:

I was waiting for him to end it with “Come back to Jamaica”

  62. fiyah says:

Fiyah Marshall gunna show you how this song should be redone just watch…

    • shottafrombirth says:

only fiyah marshall could make whats already bad worse… most garbage artist bermuda has ever heard
