Live Blog: Four Bermudians Competing In Olympics

August 3, 2012

[Updating - strong day from the Kirkland brothers who raced three times finishing 6th, 10th and 12th]

In addition to the much anticipated second day of Cup Match today [Aug 3], four Bermudians expected to compete in the London Olympics.

Jesse and Zander Kirkland will be sailing in the 49er class, Tyrone Smith will be competing in the long jump, and Jenaya Wade Fray’s Great Britain basketball team will match up against France.

The Kirklands are racing three races today; at 9.30am, 10.30am and 11.30am Bermuda time, and you can follow along live on the Olympic website here.

The Kirklands have completed eight races thus far, recording four “did not finishes,” one 19th place, one 18th place, one 12th place and one 6th place. They are in 19th place in the standings.

Tyrone Smith will also be action today, making his first appearance in the 2012 Olympics. The 27-year-old long jumper will be in Group A along with 21 other athletes. You will be able to follow along live on the Olympic website here.

The preliminaries start just before 4pm Bermuda time and as there are multiple Caribbean athletes competing, it seems likely that IMC plan to carry footage on TV, so for anyone not attending the Cup Match festivities tune in as you may be able to see Smith in action.

Bermudian Jenaya Wade Fray will also see action today as part of Great Britain’s Women’s Basketball team which is taking on France at 4pm Bermuda time. You will able to follow along live on the Olympic website here.
