Phase 1 Of Aquatics Centre Near Completion
Phase 1 of the Aquatics Centre currently under construction at the National Sports Centre is 85-90% complete according to Sean Tucker the Chairman of the National Sports Centre Trustees.
Mr Tucker said, “We are on schedule for completion in early November and once the transformers are put in place we will be able to fill the pool and do the necessary tests and then we should be ready to move to the next step.”
The National Sports Centre Aquatics Pool was originally announced back in 2008 by the Minister of Youth, Families, Sport and Community Development Glenn Blakeney.
Work began on December 1st 2010 and at that time Mr Tucker said, “Phase 1 of the Aquatics Centre which is scheduled to be finished June 2012 will consist of a 50m 8‐lane pool with a combined dive tank and dive platform. This will be the only 50m pool and dive tank in Bermuda. There will be changing facilities and restrooms that will service the pool area.”
Will the taxpayers who built this pool be able to use it or will we need to “save” it for swim clubs – - like the track we are banned from???
Does anyone know if there will be a cost to swim laps?
An Olympic pool has to be 50M by 25M by a minimum 2M depth. (No shallow end) It is a shame that as they had all that space it could not have been built to the right dimensions for competition. Similar issues happened when they built the Commonwealth games pool in Manchester in 2003 it has a shallow end and they said it could never be used for official records etc.
No Way…We certainly are not that stupid to spend all this money on a pool that could never be used for official records…on the other hand…maybe we are stupid…WTH
Let’s see if Sean will ever reveal the cost for this phase???? did we not hear that others had a cost of $15M for 2 pools and changing rooms which we could have then held Carifta Games here?
Oh sorry this is not a pool for competition – oh please tell me that granny can swim 50 meters or down 14 feet???
The Trustees got this sooooo wrong.
The original budget was $15m, for the whole project. Let’s see how many millions over budget it ends up. It was originally going to be completed June 2012, then Sept 2012. Now it’s 85% completed, and I guess may be finished by the end of the year. Late.
So the pool is not Olympic size, is Bermuda ever going to host the Olympics? Not a chance. It does however meet all requirements for the Small Island Games!
The public CAN use the track on the south field but not during events or when it has been booked for track and field training.
Look at the artificial field hokey pitch, that was built with the right intentions for a specific body of people and it is used most regularly. This new pool is much the same.
And is there any pool (not private household pools) in Bermuda that you can just jump in? No all pools require some forum of membership or fees.
Small island games is not a recognized meet (is held in a 25M pool) rather a group of small islands getting together. Carifta is a real meet that Bda can compete at but the standard is a 10 x 50M pool with warm up pool. So we cannot hold that here as the new standard is a 10x50M with warm up pool) but yet we have been going to Carifta for many years.
Why spend the money for a wrong designed pool??
You responded to one point from my comment. Pleas find the official document that states it must be 10 lanes for Carifta… and in your opinion “Small island games is not a recognized meet”
another note: the pool facility is handicap friendly.
So it’s late and over-budget. How unexpected.
is it accessible for disabled and the elderly like they promised.my son cant go down to a beach like a walking person or child can.
Eff!!!!! how much you wanna bet that this project don’t meet the Sept. 2012 deadline?
I hope that they considered the elderly and physically challenged!!!!!
