August 23, 2012

Yesterday [Aug 22] the Kappa Alpha Psi Bermuda Alumni Chapter awarded four young men — Ra’ees Tankard, Micrae Smith, Wendell Ming and Lamar Richardson — with their annual awards to assist with their College/University cost.

The organization works year round putting on events such as the Nelson Bascome Golf Tournament, the Kappa Classic youth Soccer Tournament, and their annual February show to raise funds for these awards, as well as other donations they make throughout the community.

A spokesperson said: “This year we had a good number of applicants as always we are proud of our chosen recipients, this year however we are thrilled with the well deserving recipients for 2012. The selected four youngsters have accomplished outstanding things thus far and we know that there will be a great deal of achievement in their futures.

“We wish them the best of luck this academic year. As stated earlier this is an annual award and we encourage more applicants to apply in the future as we are always looking for deserving college or college bound students to present this award to.”

The students are presently abroad in school, and their parents were on hand yesterday to receive the awards on behalf of their children. Radell Tankard [father of Ra’ees Tankard], O’Shandah Ming [mother of Wendell Ming] and Edwin Smith [father of Micrae Smith] all accepted the awards from Chapter President Dexter Johnston.

Ra’ees Tankard’s father Radell thanked the Kappas for helping to educate young males in Bermuda, while Wendell Ming’s mother also thanked the group on behalf on her son, who is studying to be a teacher.

Micrae Smith is studying at the Art Institute in Atlanta, and his father Edwin Smith thanked the Kappas, saying that “every little bit counts when comes to schooling your children.” For more information on Kappa Alpha Psi Bermuda Chapter visit their website.
